New principal to come from within the district
A new Malta High School Principal will be selected from within the ranks. That was the decision of the Malta School Board last week.
The board met in a special meeting to formally accept the resignation of Principal John Roberts, who plans to retire at the end of his contract at the end of May. Mr. Roberts has served as principal for nine years.
Supt. Kris Kuehn said he hopes to recommend a successor at the school board’s March 13 meeting.
Supt Kuehn told the board that they had the option of opening the position up to a statewide search or electing to promote someone from within the district who has the proper endorsements.
The trustees all agreed to look within the district.
Dodson’s Lady Coyotes truly are ‘The Iron 5’
Lady Coyotes Coach Wendy Hopkins could easily describe this past girls’ basketball season by quoting the opening lines from “A Tale of Two Cities” – “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”
She faced a season of 18 games fielding a team of only five players.
Five players – no substitutions during a game, no game if all five didn’t show up…any coach’s nightmare.
But five young women: Caitlin Henry, Raven Bear, Violet Lewis, Sammi Werk, and Janessa Henry showed Coach Hopkins and assistant coach Deserae KillEagle what strength of character, determination and plain stubbornness could do under the most adverse conditions.
True, the team won only two of 18 games… but in doing so they won the respect of their opponents and the fans.
“It was really a head game for them and we had to struggle with that all season,” Hopkins said. “They’d struggle through the first period realizing there were three more periods to go: but by the half, they were pretty well settled down.”

It’s a big day for Malta schools!
Today is a very big day for the Malta School District.
Bids will be opened at 2 p.m. at the district office on central for the construction of a new high school and junior high.
The Malta School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the elementary school cafeteria to review the bids and possibly to accept or reject them.
Supt. Bill Parker and high school Principal Kelly Taylor Monday reviewed the bidding structure and finances for members of the Malta Area Chamber of Commerce at their monthly meeting.
A main base bid will include the academic areas of the school including two wings containing classrooms for the high school and junior high plus the administrative area and shared areas such as science facilities, etc. The base bid also includes the cafeteria, library, shops, and custodian areas. This area should be done by Christmas.
The base bid also includes the exterior walls (shells) for the gym, dressing rooms, auditorium, and music rooms, Principal Taylor noted. This work should be completed by August 1998.
Zack Cole is Dodson’s geography bee winner
Zack Cole of Dodson School has won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.
The school-level competition at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the ninth annual National Geography Bee. The bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and Sylvan Learning Centers, which provide supplemental educational services to students at all skill levels.
The kick-off for this year’s bee was the week of Dec. 2 with thousands of schools around the US and in the five US territories participating. The school winners, including Cole, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state bee on April 4.

Highway Bar Burglars Apprehended at Scobey
Four Kansas juveniles, who have admitted burglarizing the Highway Bar in Dodson last Friday night, were apprehended Monday afternoon 10 miles south of Scobey after their car ran into a roadblock west of Scobey.
Entrance to the bar, according to the Phillips County Sheriff’s office, was through the front door. Included in the take were a .32 caliber automatic and holster, seven cartons of cigarettes, two or three knives, $318.20 in cash and currency, and an undetermined amount of cash from pinball and shuffleboard machines. A .38 caliber Colt pistol and several bottles of liquor were also taken.
The pistol the juveniles had when they were taken was the one stolen from the Highway Bar.
The four, two boys and two girls, were arrested by Daniels County authorities with assistance from Scobey police and highway patrolmen after one of the tires of the car the juveniles were driving was apparently shot out by officers at the roadblock.
After the car was stopped, the four attempted to flee on foot and were then apprehended, officials said.
Two of the four were armed but apparently did not fire any shots.
Early information received in Glasgow from the National Crime Information Center revealed the two girls were wanted by Kansas authorities as runaways and the two males for jail escape and for stealing a vehicle.

- The basketball tournament was completed in Malta, with the home team finishing third. Glasgow won. Malta played three games in 12 hours, using Partridge, Liskum, Wilson, Day, and Rader. Burner Survant was the timekeeper and the Enterprise said he had a hard time watching the games and also watching the watch.
- The Harry Vagg store at Saco was completely destroyed by a midnight fire.
- It was moving day in Malta, with Sandlie and Mills moving their law office from the Malta National Bank building to the First State Bank property. H.S. Whitcomb and L.S. Champine also moved, Whitcomb going to the First State building from the Veseth block, and Champine moving to the same location from a Front street office shared with Harry Cosner.

- The weather was chilly and the county quiet, the Enterprise reported. There was some editorial crowing over the fact that the Milk River Irrigation Projet had been awarded six million dollars to start construction in spite of eastern opposition. There was also excitement over an oil strike in the Swift Current country, west of St. Mary Lake. Oil samples which the Enterprise said were “of finest quality for lubricating purposes” were on display at Great Falls and the company’s stock had risen from 10 cents to $1 per share. The editor also mentioned oil seepages discovered south of Malta, as a guide to the promoters in future operations. Strangely enough, 43 years later finds the country still in an oil dither!
