Nutrition key to Malta’s Head Start meals
Where’s the one place you’re guaranteed a filling, nutritious and wholesome meal?
The Malta Head Start Program…Honest!
Bonnie Ost has been cooking for the Head Start program for eight years (she’s been cooking since childhood when she was Bonnie Koss on the family ranch).
Raising seven children (one a nephew), Bonnie has learned what children like to eat and brings that knowledge to her menus for the Head Start program.
“The Child Adult Food Care Program (CAFCP) is very stringent in its guidelines,” Bonnie said, “We can’t serve any processed foods – hot dogs, chicken nugget, fish sticks, lunch meats, or numerous other items.
“Luckily, I like to read – I read cookbooks like other people read novels – and I’ve found recipes which allow me to make homemade variations of chicken strips and nuggets and fish.
“I make the breading and bake the meat to meet all specifications,” she added. “The kids really seem to love them.”

Lifters were required to perform three lifts and the total amount lifted was divided by their body weight to determine winners.
Hanson lifted a total of 975 pounds and based on his 137 bodyweight was awarded first place. He lifted 195 on the bench press, 325 on the squat, and 455 on the deadlift.
Open for business
Westside Self Service, on the west side of Malta on Highway 2, is open for business again after being closed for less than three weeks after a fire destroyed the business on January 25. Fortunately, owner Ezzie Ereaux already had a new building under construction at the time of the fire and firefighters were able to protect it during the blaze. Some services at Westside are yet to be available, but the convenience store will be offering full service at its gas pumps at self-service prices.

Playground Funds Will Be Raised At Dance
The city beautification planning board will sponsor a dance on St. Patrick’s Day to raise funds for the purchase of playground equipment for Malta, according to Louie LaRoche, chairman of the board. The membership of the board is composed of representatives of ten local organizations.
It will be necessary to raise $1,200 to equip the four proposed playgrounds so plans are underway to print and sell 1,500 tickets. Each organization represented on the board will be allotted a part of the tickets to be sold. Music for the dance is to be provided by the Saco Merrymakers.
Of the four proposed playgrounds, one will be located north of the hospital, one close to the library, one by the courthouse, and one by the south side ball diamond. Some equipment, donated in the past by the Legion and Kiwanis, will be used and additional equipment is being ordered. Plans are also underway to get the playgrounds in working shape as soon as possible.

- A blizzard appeared to have blacked out much of the local news in the Enterprise and the Russian-Japanese war seemed to hold the center of attention. However, there was promise of some crime news. Reservation police had picked up a band of horses recognized as belonging to a rustler gang. Believed to have lost their mounts as the result of the storm, a posse was out after the malefactors and the Enterprise remarked that a desperate battle was expected any minute.
- The JYP club met to observe Washington’s Birthday and to elect officers. Those chosen were George Clark, president; Homer Flynn, vice president; Grace Tucker, secretary; Garland Johnston, treasurer, and Berton Cox, editor. The club members included, in addition to the above, the Misses Florence Parsons, Mary Erfurth, Divilo Ebaugh, Edna Haley, Lola McKillen, Jeannie Davidson, and James Davidson.
