Lady Mavs defeat Lustre, Frazer

The North Country Lady Mavericks are now 9-1 and have posted six straight wins in the regular season.

This past weekend, the Lady Mavericks posted dominant wins against the Lustre Christian Lions and Frazer Bearcubs. They defeated the Lions 53-27 on Friday, January 14, in Lustre. They then hosted the Bearcubs in Hinsdale and defeated them 75-4 on Saturday, January 15.

The Lady Mavericks are scheduled to host the Dodson Lady Coyotes in Whitewater on Friday, January 21, at 6 p.m. North Country will then head to Circle to face the Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 22.

North Country only allowed two points in the opening two quarters against Lustre. During that span, the Mavs scored 29 points. The Mavericks also outscored Lustre 14-5 in the third quarter. The Lions outscored North Country 18-10 in the fourth.

"The girls came out mentally focused and did a great job communicating and switching up our defenses," Lady Mavericks Head Coach Amber Erickson said. "Offensively we did a nice job of pushing the tempo and executing in the halfcourt."

The Lady Mavs were led by Paige Wasson who had 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Teagan Erickson had 10 points and four rebounds. Jaycee Erickson had nine points, five assists, and three steals. Kendall Scheffelmear had four points, six rebounds, and two steals. Mattea McColly had five rebounds.

The Mavs had 19 offensive rebounds, 13 assists and 15 steals.

In North Country's win over Frazer, the Lady Mavs were led by Wasson who had 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. T. Erickson had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals. J. Erickson had 11 points, three assists and three steals. Josie Brown had seven points. Scheffelmear had four points, five rebounds, and three steals. Zandora Longtree had two points and six steals.

"In the Frazer game, we were able to get all 12 of our players minutes and everyone scored, which was really cool," Coach Erickson said. "It was fun to watch them work together and help their teammates get open looks at the basket."

Though the team is playing at a high level, Coach Erickson knows that there are aspects of the game that her team can improve on.

"I would like to see the girls continue to focus on doing the little things right every game, such as boxing out, taking care of the ball, setting and using their screens and always communicating on both ends of the floor," Coach Erickson said.
