One Nation, Under God
It has been an interesting start to the sports year and not for the reason that I initially thought.
In this day and age, I am not surprised that a game would be postponed or canceled because of a sickness, whether that be a common cold or flu given the constant threat of another virus that starts with a “C.”
I was shocked and amazed that sporting events have been postponed or shortened due to a lack of officials.
Sadly, not everyone wants to officiate a game, and referees shortages seem to be the biggest threat to sports in the 2021-22 season.
When I finally had the chance to catch a game this year, it was apparent to see why we are in such a shortage. People yell at refs like they would yell at a television screen, with reckless abandon.
Player safety is huge in sports, even more so than in previous years. Or so it seems.
Referees know this. They want all athletes to make it on and off the court safely during events. They, or at least most of these men and women in stripes try to call games right down the line.
Yes, they miss calls. They are not perfect, but they try. The amount of abuse that they take is wild. They get personally attacked over and over. Yet, they come to work. They get just as much exercise as the athletes and have to try to keep an eye on everything happening in the game. Then they have to worry about grown people, that know better, abusing them.
Yes, these things come with wearing the uniform, but the officials will continue to disappear if the abuse continues.
I can remember the last time I was talked down to. I didn’t like it. It almost unleashed a beast out of me. No one likes to be attacked. No kid likes to see a loved one get kicked out of a game after yelling at a ref.
My respect goes out to anyone officiating a game. You have my respect. That is not an easy gig or just a job that anyone can do.
If we want to see our local athletes continue to play, referees are essential. Yes, we can disagree with calls, but no one will want to officiate if they are constantly being verbally abused. I know I wouldn’t.
If you do have the heart, and the patience, and are interested in helping young men and women compete in high school sports as an official, please contact the Montana Officials Association.
