Malta running back headed down under

Malta Mustang running back, Jade Olson, added another element to his already impressive football resume this week.

In the summer of 2012, he will travel to the Gold Coast of Australia to represent Montana and compete in the Down Under Bowl on the North Central Conference Football Team.

Olson is excited for the opportunity to be an ambassador for his family, school, community, state, and country in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Malta halfback rushed for just under 1,900 yards for the Class B State Runner Up football team.

On top of the invitation from Down Under Sports to go to Australia, he has also been invited to play in the Montana All-Star game in Billings in June as well as the East-West Shrine game in Great Falls in July.

St. Mary’s School to close

St. Mary’s Parish School in Malta will close its doors at the end of the school year in May after 39 years of operation.

Officials from St. Mary’s announced the closing on Sunday, January 12.

Bishop Anthony Milone of the Great Falls/Billings diocese said the decision was made after consultation with the St. Mary’s School board, Father James O’Neil, pastor of St. Mary, and Sister Katherine Franchett, superintendent of the Montana Catholics Schools.

According to Bishop Milone, the number of students in the school has continued to decrease, despite the hard work of Father O’Neil, the school board, and the principals to maintain enrollment and financial costs. Current enrollment consists of 37 students in grades K-6.

“The entire school community is to be commended for the noble effort they have made to raise enrollments and funding,” the bishop added. “I want to stress that this closing of St. Mary’s School at the end of the 1996-97 term is no one’s fault. It is a matter of demographics, economics, and realistic planning.”

100 Years Ago - 1922

- The Moore Motor Company, Ford dealer in Malta, had remodeled their showroom and shop, put up a new sign, and otherwise caught up with the trend of the times.

- Appearing in the junior class play, “Miss Molly” were Kenneth Liskum, Dorothy Edwards, Fred Niebaur, Carrie Wolf, and Iris Stine.

- C.E. Magner had set up his wireless outfit and had been successful. He had listened to a number of big shots telling their troubles to the world.

- The Milk River Valley bank in Glasgow had been forced to close its doors.

- James Garthofner of the Missouri River country had shipped a carload of alfalfa seed. He estimated his crop as worth $5,000. He planned to experiment with Cossack alfalfa the coming year.

118 Years Ago - 1904

It was pretty cold back in January 1904, and not much stirring about by the residents of Malta.

- Iceman John Ebaugh was busy putting up the winter harvest for use by the saloons and restaurants the coming summer.

- T.D. Wright, who had forged B.D. Phillips’ name to several checks, was found to be mentally deranged. Editor Smiley comments, “He has been in the newspaper business for about 30 years and that is enough to make any man batty.”

- Editor Frank Maple of the Harlem Republican seems to be having some trouble inducing Harlemites to come across on subscriptions. According to his statement, he has nine bonafide subscribers and furthermore that after February 1, 1904, “Those nine and no others will receive a copy of the paper unless somebody pays up. It’s easy enough to get the dead-heads on the list, but it’s H--- getting them off.”
