Christmas Grinch steals $1,000 from two GN poker machines
A burglar decided it was better to receive than give in a Christmas morning poker machine robbery of the Great Northern Motor Hotel in Malta that netted the thief just under $1,000.
Usually open 24 hours a day, the GN closed its doors around 7 p.m. Christmas Eve and remained closed until 10 a.m. the day after Christmas, according to manager Joyce Wilson.
With no visible signs of forced entry, Wilson believes the thief was hiding at closing time and was locked inside. Exit from the building was easy as there are several exit-only doors in the back of the facility.
The thief broke into two machines, attempted to gain entry into a third, and left 15 others untouched around 1 a.m. Christmas morning. Just under $1,000 in bills only was taken from the two machines located in the upstairs lounge.
Wilson said the thief left change in the machines and didn’t take anything else, leaving alone alcohol and cigarettes.
“I checked really thoroughly. Someone had to be hiding out. There was just no other way in,” Wilson said. “I checked all the bathrooms and padlocks. There are a few closets in the boiler room or they could have been hiding somewhere in the garage. We’re kind of baffled really. There are only two keys to the front door. I had one with me and the other one was locked inside. I was here until about 7 o’clock. We probably locked up at about 7.”
Whitewater man survives flash fire
A Whitewater man remains in a burn center in Salt Lake City, Utah, after a Dec.27 flash fire caused second and third-degree burns on his right hand.
Norris Berg, a field operator for North American Resource Company (NARCO), and Bill Fromman, a contract consultant from Malta, were thawing out a regulator in a well-house at the Bowdoin Wildlife Refuge area when the flash fire occurred.
To warm up the regulator, the two men were using a catalytic heater, a non-combustible heater that works on a chemical reaction.
Because both men were wearing heavy clothing in the cold weather, their injuries weren’t as severe as they could have been.

Mustang Bus Sideswiped
The Mustang bus carrying 23 passengers including coaches, varsity, junior varsity teams, and managers of the Malta Mustang basketball squad was involved in a sideswiping incident with a car carrying two Malta teenagers last Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs were headed for games in Chester.
Fortunately, none of the 26 people involved suffered any injuries and only moderate damage was reported on each of the vehicles.
The car was driven by Juanita Jean Kolczak, 16, of Malta and Karia Kay Loney was a passenger.
Keith Holmes, the owner of the bus, was driving it. Both vehicles were headed west on Highway 2 when the accident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. 2.9 miles west of Malta. The Kolczak car was attempting to make a left turn off the highway onto a side road and had been waiting for an eastbound car to pass.
The two vehicles sideswiped and the car went into the left borrow pit between the highway and the side road on the south and the bus traveled down the side road.
