Burglar strikes for $3,000 heist at bar

Over $3,000 in Canadian money and some US money were stolen early Friday, Dec. 13, during a break-in at Kid Curry’s Lounge and Westside Restaurant in Malta.

The burglar broke open the casino machines and also broke into a safe which was kept in the office. A door on the north side of the business was forced open to gain entry at approximately 3:30 a.m.

Sheriff Gene Peigneux said the burglary may be the work of the same thief or thieves who hit five area bars, including Kid Curry’s earlier this year, breaking into poker machines, and getting away with over $10,000.

Those break-ins, which were done with quick precision, were part of a string of burglaries committed along the Hi-Line.

District Five VFW Speech Contest Sunday

Nine of the 11 posts in VFW District 5 have conducted Voice of Democracy essay contests and submitted the winning speeches on tape to the district committee for judging, Leslie Eskildsen, chairman, said today.

The oral essays on the subject, “My Responsibility to Freedom,” will be aired over the Glasgow radio station on Sunday, Jan. 2, at 2 p.m. Judges living in Hinsdale, Malta, and Saco will listen to the broadcast in their homes, and judge the speeches. Eskildsen will call each judge immediately after the program so that the name of the winning student and VFW post can be announced immediately.

The tape which wins the district contest will be sent to the Department of Montana to compete against winning tapes from the other six districts in January. The Department winner will be entered in the national contest.

The national first prize is a $10,000 scholarship. District 5 will award a $25 defense bond to the winner here in next Sunday’s judging.

Bars Warned About Under-Age Customers

Because of numerous instances of minors frequenting and drinking in Phillips County bars, County Attorney Willis McKeon Tuesday sent this letter to all the bars in the county:

For the past several weeks, I have received complaints about persons under 19 years of age frequenting the bars in Phillips County. Many of the complaints directly concern minors frequenting the bars to play the pool tables or other amusement devices located therein. Some of the complaining parties further state that they see underage high school students drinking at the bar and in the booths at different bar establishments.

The law provides that persons under 19 years of age are not to be permitted inside your bar establishment. This means that minors are not allowed in your bar to play the pool tables or other amusement devices, even though they do not intend to drink while in your bar.

I am instructing all law enforcement personnel within the county to make an effort to enforce this provision of the law. I ask your cooperation in this regard and request that you make every effort possible to determine the age of your patrons, and that you order anyone found to be under 19 years of age to leave your premises at once.

Santa Claus Makes Surprise Appearance

The Moose Lodge members and their families were very pleasantly surprised at their Christmas party at the Legion Hall on Saturday evening by an unexpected visit from Santa Claus.

The children and parents were in the midst of a Christmas song when the door flew open and in popped Santa with a huge pack of toys and goodies for the kiddies. Santa stayed only a few minutes and left as soon as his reindeer had been fed, explaining that he had a long way to go and must hurry.

After the program, the members had a little dance and a good time was had by all.

- The news is extremely bobtailed. Due to some mischance, the only portion of the paper bound into the file was a second section devoted to the publication of the delinquent tax notice.

118 Years Ago – 1903

- Page One of the Enterprise said the dissonances of a brass band killed a mule at Jackson, Mississippi. Malta also had a brand new cornet band, but there were no casualties that far along.

- The grand opening of the Great Northern Hotel took place, with the public invited to a free dance and supper.

- The knights of Pythias dance at Trafton Hall was the scintillating holiday affair. There was music by Thompson, Backues, and Partridge. Byron Hurley and Lulu Tressler won the honors in the prize waltz contest. Eighty couples ate supper at Harry Otterman’s restaurant and, renewed in strength, went back and danced until dawn.
