Saco marks the end of a $1.3 million water project
The town of Saco marked the completion of a $1,350,000 water project last Thursday with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Officials gathered north of town to cut the ribbon with their new 150,000-gallon cement water storage tank in the background.
The $477,000 storage tank replaces the now obsolete landmark storage tank tower within the city limits.
The project also included laying a 12-inch water main from the storage tank into town, replacement of 11 fire hydrants, the addition of two new hydrants, and installation of two valves.
Project engineer Barry Damschen said the main purpose of the project was to increase the town’s ability to fight potential fires.
City offers siren settlement at 6 p.m.
The battle over Malta’s emergency siren could be over.
Voting Monday night on the last item on their agenda, the city council voted 4-0 to begin sounding the city siren at 6 p.m. instead of 9:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 2.
The motion, made by Councilman David Rummel and seconded by Councilman Garry Adams, contains the stipulation that Tim and Arlys Spear, owners of the GN Hotel and Maltana Motel, must agree to drop their lawsuit seeking to have the siren declared a public nuisance.
The council met for about an hour in executive session with their lawyer before the regular meeting started.
Mayor Shyla Jones said the city’s attorney would take the offer to the law firm representing the Spears.

Saco area added to 9-1-1 emergency call service
Residents of Saco and the surrounding area are now connected to the 9-1-1 emergency telephone system, according to Sheriff Gene Peigneux.
The changeover took place on Dec. 3. Unlike residents in the rest of the county, Saco area residents have had to dial the complete sheriff’s telephone number to call dispatch until now.
Nemont Telephone Cooperative which services the Saco area had hoped to have the necessary new equipment to allow 9-1-1 service hooked up by last April but it wasn’t completed until recently, the sheriff said.
Even though they now have 9-1-1 service, the Saco area will not be part of the “enhanced” service available in the rest of the county, the sheriff said.
The enhanced system automatically gives the dispatcher receiving an emergency call a readout of the telephone number from which the call is being made and can be crucial if an excited caller hangs up before giving all the needed information.
Sheriff Peigneux said the equipment installed by Nemont doesn’t support the enhanced service.

Randy Frazier’s band will provide music for dancing from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. Free hats and noisemakers will be provided by the sponsors, the Malta Volunteer Fire Department, and Malta Businessmen.
The Musical Tradition of Christmas
The musical tradition of Christmas is believed to have begun in 129, when Telesphorus, Bishop of Rome, decreed that “in the holy night of the Nativity of our Lord and Savior, (all) do celebrate public church services and in them solemnly sing the Angel’s Hymn…”
Since then, literally thousands of carols have been written by many, such as Sir Walter Raleigh, Martin Luther, Johannes Brahms, Francis Scott Key, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Pope Pius IX.
But Christmas songs weren’t called carols until well into the 13th Century, because, during most of the Middle Ages, priests and monks did all the singing inside the churches.

Treasurer Says 1947 Plates Will Be Stickers
It will be “another sticker on the windshield” for Montana motorists in 1947, according to C.E. Secrest, County Treasurer. He reported that state authorities have notified him that 1947 motor vehicle licenses will be windshield stickers. The state has been unable to secure license plate steel, J.E. Henry, registrar of motor vehicles, has informed Secrest.
However, each motorist will be required to keep on his car his 1946 license plate. A dual record must be kept of both numbers by the treasurer’s office. Numbers need not correspond. Neither the 1946 license plate nor the windshield sticker will be sufficient in itself.
Internment Camp Prisoners To Speak Here Tomorrow
Rev. and Mrs. A. Walker Hall, missionaries to China, who spent seven months in the notorious Stanley internment camp at Hong Kong, are to speak at the Assembly of God Church in Malta tomorrow evening at 7:45.
Their first term of service in China was cut short by the outbreak of the war, at which time they were interned and suffered many privations as captives of the Japanese. Repatriation on the Gripsholm brought them to this country on August 27, 1942.
Recently, they returned from Havana, Cuba, where they have been carrying on missionary work among the Chinese. In a few months, they plan to go to China again.
