Lady Mavs head to Scobey to 3C Tourney

The North Country Mavericks Volleyball Team have earned the third seed in the 2021 3C District Tournament this weekend, thanks to their 9-3 record against 3C opponents.

“We are feeling pretty optimistic that we are coming together at the right time,” Mavericks Coach Charlene Wasson said.

The Mavericks, who are 11-5 overall will face Richey-Lambert, the 3C’s 6th seed on Thursday, October 28, at 3 p.m. in Scobey.

Though 13 of 10 district teams will enter the 3C tourney after the play-in games on Tuesday, October 26, only five of those teams will make the Eastern C Divisional Tournament in Sidney. The Eastern C is scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 4.

The Mavericks have only faced Richey-Lambert once this season, and in that match, North Country won in 3. The scores were 25-17, 27-25, and 25-20.

That matchup was the first official regular-season game for North Country and since then the Fusion bounced back, going 7-4 against 3C opponents.

Coach Wasson said that she has been watching Richey-Lambert.

“They have a very strong middle hitter,” Coach Wasson said. “Sometimes they play really well and then sometimes they don’t play very good at all, but you never know at tournament time. Some kids just can turn it on and be prepared.”

Coach Wasson expects the latter, a RL Fusion team that will play substantially better than when they met in September.

“But we are also better too,” Coach Wasson said. “So that makes a difference.”

North Country will likely be matched up with second seed Froid-Lake if they can defeat Richey-Lambert. Froid-Lake won a very competitive game against North Country earlier this month. The score was 3-0.

“Volleyball is a game that you can be prepared for and then in a moment, things can swing in either direction.”

Coach Wasson is hoping that their preparation will take them far into the postseason.

In their final game of the regular season, the Mavericks defeated Nashua in three sets. The scores were 25-16, 25-11, and 25-14.

Coach Wasson compiled stats from the win.
