Mustangs now 6-0, headed to Glasgow to take on 5-1 Scotties

After posting a 37-6 shellacking on the Glasgow Scotties on Friday, October 15, at Scottie Field, the Malta Mustangs (7-0) are one win away from posting a perfect regular-season record

All that stands in Malta's way are the Fairfield Eagles, who the team will face on Friday, October 22.

The Mustangs have had tough luck against the Fairfield Eagles in recent history, losing to the Eagles in each of the last eight times the teams have met. The most recent clash between these teams was on October 16, 2020, a game in which Fairfield won 14-8. The Mustangs suffered brutal losses of 34-0 and 42-6 in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

The Fairfield game will serve as Senior Night for the Malta Mustangs at Mustang Field. The game will start at 7 p.m., but the ceremony will take place prior to the start of the game.

The Eagles (6-1) have one blemish on their record, a 30-18 loss to Glasgow on Friday, October 1. In their most recent game, the Eagles defeated the Cut Bank Wolves 20-14 last Friday, October 15. The Eagles have scored 224 points this year while giving up 97. The Mustangs have given up only 44 points while scoring 278.

"We just have to get prepared," Senior Quarterback Connor Tuss said. "Be ready to go and come out firing like we did (against Glasgow)."

In Malta's win over Glasgow, the Mustangs posted a total of 436 yards, 377 of which were rushing yards. Senior Rex Williamson led the charge with 263 yards on the ground and two touchdowns on 23 carries.

"We had great blocks, awesome blocks," Williamson said. "We just pounded it down their throat and got after it."

Williamson also had 29 yards on a punt return, giving him a total of 292 all-purpose yards.

"It feels good," Tuss said. "We are putting ourselves up for better success but we are still not satisfied. We have to prepare to go again, starting Monday, for the Eagles."

Senior Cash Salsbery had 73 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Camryn Mears had 37 yards on six carries.

Tuss was 2-of-5 passing for 59 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Both of Tuss' passes were caught by Shawn Gilkerson, who had one touchdown and 59 yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs held Glasgow to 231 yards. Malta's defense snatched two interceptions; one by Kaden Bishop that he returned 18 yards and the other by Tuss that he returned for 13 yards. Mears forced two fumbles and recovered one. Dwight Werk forced a fumble and Bishop recovered a fumble.

"Our defensive lineman did an awesome job," Williamson said. "They pressured the quarterback at all times, the linebackers filled (gaps) and we just got it done."

Malta had six penalties for 70 yards and Glasgow had seven penalties for 58 yards.
