Junky yards are a topic on the next city council agenda

The topic of junky yards will be an agenda item on the next Malta City Council agenda.

Mayor Shyla Jones requested the agenda item, after a discussion that occurred during the public comment portion of the last city council.

Dennis Kuether of Great Falls thanked the city for beginning action to force the clean-up of a neighbor’s property in Malta. He and his wife own her parents’ home in Malta.

Earlier in the meeting, Public Works Director John Demarais reported that the property owner had been told two weeks earlier that complaints had been received and he needed to clean it up or face city action.

Demarais said the owner has made some progress, “but not enough.”

On-line college class spurs local recycling effort

Want to help Emily Fields get a good grade? Recycle.

Fields, a Malta resident, is taking classes at the University of Montana-Western online and is currently enrolled in a class entitled Personal and Community Health.

To complete the course, she has to do a community project.

“I chose recycling,” she said.

After getting permission from the city council, she has put out trash containers at four locations.

Fields hopes the public will deposit aluminum and steel cans (soup cans, etc.), and plastics such as milk jugs, water bottles, and pop bottles.

Fields will collect the items and take them to recycling points: aluminum cans to MOI, steel cans to Havre, and plastics to Missoula, the only place in Montana they are being recycled, she said.

Dodson picks up third win of the year at Rocky Boy

Dodson won its third game of the season with a 60-39 victory over Rocky Boy last Thursday.

The victory over Rocky Boy was added to Dodson’s schedule because of Hays’ canceled season.

Dodson held slim leads after the first quarter 12-6 and at halftime 24-18, but it was the third quarter where the Coyotes made their move, outscoring Rocky Boy 20-7.

That propelled them to a 44-23 lead entering the fourth quarter, where they preserved the victory with a 16-16 push in the fourth.

Lindsey Kirkaldie led Dodson with 16 points, Jenn Reynolds had 14, and Colleen Cole added 10. Reynolds led a balanced rebounding effort with five as Dodson outrebounded Rocky Boy 31-24. Sarah Marney also contributed by leading with five steals.

City to seek bids for a new street sweeper

The City of Malta will advertise for bids on a new street sweeper to replace its aging machine, but it hopes to purchase a demonstration model.

Gene Thomas, a representative for Western Plains in Billings, has offered the city a Johnston street sweeper demonstration model with less than 1,000 hours of use for a reduced price, but because of state law, the city will have to go through a bid process.

The city has agreed to rent the demonstration machine for $3,500 a month while bids are sought. If the demonstration machine ends up being the low bid, as expected, the monthly rental will be applied to the purchase price.

100 Years Ago - 1921

- The Enterprise recounted a “bunion derby” which involved J.F. Kilduff, Henry Wolfe, and S.P. “Steve” Mahoney. The trio walked to Dodson, leaving here about 10 o’clock and arriving at the west county town about five hours later. There was a stop at Wagner en route, for chow. The hikers returned to Malta the same night by way of Jim Kill’s train service.

- The county livestock shipping association was preparing another shipment under the direction of George DeFlyer. Four cars were being readied for the cattle. The previous shipment had sold at a $5.35 top and on down to $3.75.

- Twin girls were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gus Tank at their ranch home in the Telegraph Creek country.

- H.A. Johnson, the Enterprise publisher, was on a trip to Helena as a delegate to the IOOF assembly. He also planned to visit his daughter, Gayle, at the state university at Missoula.

- Harry Cosner and A.S. Hanscom had discovered some business at Glasgow and had gone down to attend to it.

-----------------------------------

118 Years Ago – 1903

- Louis S. Goslin of Great Falls had purchased the Phillips mail route from Sam Dodge. Goslin planned to extend the route to Alder Gulch and make the through trip in one day. The Circle C Ranch at Brookside was a new scheduled stop on the route. Goslin took over the business with similar stage line experience out of Great Falls.

- Reservation police, reinforced by a group of special Indian deputies, took out after a rustler group on orders from Major Scobey. On Muddy Creek, near the Canadian line, the sleuths uncovered a rustler camp complete with shack, corrals, “hot” beef carcasses, and a large supply of ammunition. Everything was there, in fact, except the rustlers who had decamped the day before, apparently. The party brought back 150 heads of stolen horses but no thieves.
