Mavs win three, to host three home games

The North Country Mavericks picked up a few wins last weekend, winning every set that they played, despite being tasked with a double-header.

The Mavs defeated the Frazer Bearcubs 3-0 on Friday, October 8, the Savage Warriors 3-0 on Saturday, October 9, and then the Fairview Warriors on Saturday night.

“This trip saved on our travel and prepared us for a tournament-style day where you might have to play two matches in one day,” Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. “We left early in the morning and got back late, but all in all this was a great day for Maverick Volleyball. We really started to click and come together in these two matches.”

The Mavericks will face three opponents for the second week in a row. Their first game against Malta will take place in Whitewater on Thursday, October 14, at 5 p.m. They will then host MonDak on Friday, October 15, in Saco for Saco’s Senior Night, at 4:30 p.m. Their last game will be the third of three home games, but in Hinsdale for Hinsdale’s Senior Night on Saturday, October 16, at 1 p.m.

The scores in North Country’s win over Fairview were 25-11, 25-16, and 25-11.

Paige Wasson led with 12 kills. Teagan Erickson had ten kills. Wasson and Erickson each had one block. Jaycee Erickson had 12 assists, seven kills, and six digs. Kora LaBrie had seven digs. Zandora Longtree had five aces and six digs.

“I was happy to see our free ball passing and defensive passing is coming around. We are getting better to where we have a faster flow on offensive attacks,” Coach Wasson said. “We are trying different attacks and making adjustments better on defense.”

The scores in the Mavs’ win over Savage were 25-21, 25-20, and 25-18.

Wasson led the team in kills, with nine. Ja. Erickson had eight assists, eight aces and five digs.

In North Country’s win over Frazer, the scores were 25-11, 25-7, and 25-16.

“Frazer is new to varsity volleyball so this match was a good opportunity to focus on a few things,” Coach Wasson said. “One, we tried to spot serve more in this match, and in the third set the JV players got to finish it out for us.”

Coach Wasson said that it is good to face younger teams because their hits are often unpredictable.

Here are the stats against Frazer, compiled by Coach Wasson.

Aces: Teagan Erickson 8, Zandora Longtree 7, Kora LaBrie 3, Shelbi LaBrie 2, Paige Wasson, Mattea McColly, Berkley Hillman, Jessa Erickson and Layna Jones each with 1

Kills: T. Erickson 6, McColly 5, Wasson and LaBrie each with 2, Jaycee Erickson, K. LaBrie, Codi Donniaquo, Hillman, and Je. Erickson each with 1

Assists: Erickson 6, Longtree and Je. Erickson each with 4, Wasson 3, Hillman and S. LaBrie each with 1.

Digs: Mattea McColly and Jessa Erickson each with 1.

“Maverick volleyball picked up three important conference wins this week,” Coach Wasson said. “This should help us move up in the standings and prepare us for the end of the season.”
