Dr. Veseth busy climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro

A Malta resident and his daughter have taken on the challenge of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Dr. Mike Veseth and his daughter, Capt. Katie Veseth, a U.S. Air Force officer, are currently part of a climbing expedition of the famed mountain.

“During the summer many people saw Mike in the wee hours of the morning hiking out to the city dump and back with a large backpack filled with gallon jugs of water,” said his wife, Rosemary, an elementary school teacher.

“He did this to get in shape for the climb, although he does have a porter at Mt. Kilimanjaro helping to carry things.”

Dr. Veseth and his daughter plan to take in an African safari following the four-day ascent and two-day descent.

Don’t worry, be happy!

Anna Bezhanyan has only been in America for 23 days, but she’s already immersed in school and community life in Malta.

A 15-year-old exchange student from Vanadzar, Armenia, Anna is finding her Armenian-English Dictionary to be her constant companion as she undertakes a daunting class schedule of PE, History, English, Spanish, Algebra, Woodworking (“I like to work with my hands”) and Government.

“It is different from my school in Vandzar. There we do not have a choice in the subjects we study,” she explained. “There is a daily schedule but the classes change every day and we study what we are given.”

An only child, Anna is currently living with Steve and Susan Haag, and their son D’Andre, in Malta.

The Vote is Over!

Decision cast on school for the next century

Malta District officials breathed a sigh of relief last night as voters gave majority votes to the Riverview site and high school and elementary district bond issues totaling $6 million.

But no one was feeling cocky. With 72 percent of the 2,270 registered voters showing up at the polls, the three ballot issues passed with 55-45 percent margins.

Supt. Bill Parker said officials had hoped for a “massive turnout” so that the final results would represent a majority vote. “We’re pleased about that.”

We’re going to go forward and build a decent school for the next century,” he added.

Music Box will house band students this year

The Music Box will once again ring with the sound of music as Malta School District students head back to school next Monday.

Work is underway to clean up the facility on the old site which was structurally undamaged by the Dec. 24 fire but did suffer smoke damage which has to be cleaned up.

One reason for pressing the facility back into service is the fact that 85 students are signed up this year for band, Supt. Bill Parker told board members last week.

That’s simply too many to accommodate in the metal building behind the Country Home which K.N. Energy has allowed the district to use.

Burglar gets $2,000 plus at Kid Curry

A thief got away with more than $2,000 early Tuesday morning after breaking into five poker machines at the Kid Curry Lounge in Malta.

Sheriff Gene Peigneux said the burglary occurred between 4 and 5 a.m. Tuesday. A door on the north side of the building was forced open to gain entry.

The sheriff said the break-in did not appear to have been the work of the same person or persons who broke into poker machines at five Malta businesses earlier this year. More than $10,000 was reported stolen in those break-ins.

Crops Good Despite Lack of Rain

Crops in Phillips County were a lot better than expected this year, what with the lack of moisture and extreme heat.

Harvesting is almost 100 percent complete at this time.

Reports indicate that winter wheat was running between 30 and 40 bushels an acre and spring wheat 20 to 30 bushels. Barley yields were also good, from 20 to 40 bushels, depending on conditions in certain areas.

Some places in the county received rain at crucial times in the growing season that accounted for larger yields.

Aerial Spray for Mosquitos

The city of Malta will be sprayed by airplane this Friday or Saturday depending on weather conditions, it has been announced by Bill Kangas, mosquito control district supervisor.

Spraying will be done in the early morning hours by Gary Martin of the Mendel Flying Service.

It is hoped to rid the city of mosquitoes for the Labor Day weekend.

Knutson Wins Soap Box Derby

Bancroft and Smith Come in Second and Third

Jay Knutson won the first prize of $25 in the first annual soapbox derby staged last Saturday afternoon on Taylor Hill south of Malta. Coming in second to win $20 was George Bancroft, Jr. in his speedy, low-slung job.

Third place in the derby was won by Lewell Smith in a yellow and black car and fourth place went to Jim Garland. Bringing up the rear as fifth place winner was Eddie Judge.

A large crowd of spectators was parked on the hill to witness the race. The cars were tested first for speed and the first three sent down the hill in the first heat.

The race was preceded by a parade through the business district at which time the cars were judged for beauty.

Three Vet Brothers Announce Opening of New Nite Club

The opening of The Country Club, a new nightspot on the city’s eastern edge, is announced for Friday, August 30, by Kenneth, Keith, and Byron Stine, the club’s proprietors. The establishment will feature chicken and steak dinners at all times, as well as other refreshments of a liquid nature.

All three veterans of World War 2, the Stines purchased the building just east of Malta which was originally the home of the Milk River Valley Gun Club, later the Malta Golf Club, and recently the property of the local Malta Farmers’ Union. The building was moved closer to the highway, set on a concrete foundation, and completely remodeled inside and out, with the three brothers doing much of the work themselves.
