Zortman mine settles lawsuit for $4.5 million; could clear path to re-opening
A $4.5 million settlement was reached over alleged pollution into the Missouri and Milk Rivers, and the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, by gold mines at Zortman and Landusky in U.S. District Court in Billings on Monday.
Although an additional $32.3 million in construction is included in the settlement, it would be inaccurate to include that amount in the actual dollar figure because the mining companies were already committed to that project, according to a Pegasus official.
Otteson stars for the East Shrine team, Robinson named
Malta’s Josh Otteson, a 1996 MHS graduate, was instrumental in securing a 20-0 win for the East team in the 50th annual Montana East-West Shrine Football Game last Saturday night at Great Falls Memorial Stadium. Otteson and Landon Lamb were Malta’s representatives on the eastern Montana team.
It being the 50th year of the contest, those who played in the first-ever Shrine Game were honored. Honorees included Malta’s Lee Robinson, who played center in that first game.
Robinson can see many changes since that time.
“The team practiced in Great Falls for a week or 10 days,” he said. “There were only 22 players, no separate teams for offense and defense. Often, the players would see action for the entire game.”
Robinson said there were 17 former players, a coach, and two managers from that first year, were attending this year’s game.
“I felt Otteson should have gotten MVP this year,” he said, “and I know that several others from that 50-year team thought he should have, too.”

Tourists Pay Heavy Fines For Brief Sojourn in Montana
It could all have been settled for a five-dollar bill. But Anna A. Keefer and John Hall, brother and sister from Phoenix, Arizona, chose to take it the hard way, so it cost them $220 and several days in the Blaine County Jail.
The Arizona couple was picked up last weekend about 10 miles east of Harlem by Patrolman John Garland on a speeding charge. He offered to take a $5 bond on the charge and let them continue on their way, but they refused to pay up, so Garland took them back to Harlem. At Harlem, they evaded him and headed east. Garland called Patrolman Jerry Johnson in Malta, who picked them up a short distance west of town. Hall was driving at the time, although his sister was driving when Garland stopped them.
Hall and his sister were lodged in the county jail overnight. The woman succeeded in wrecking the interior of the jail before morning. Taken back to Blaine County again, Hall was fined $160 for drunken driving. His sister was fined $50 on a reckless driving charge and $10 to cover the damage to the county jail.
