Phillips County Library Upgrades Services

It’s a busy June for the Phillips County Library as they not only begin their summer reading program, they are also increasing their resources and services.

The Library received four new Dell computers and wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) access through a grant administered by the Montana State Library.

The new equipment was purchased with funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce provided by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

“The new equipment and new Wi-Fi capabilities really make a difference in our service,” said Librarian Janeen Brookie. “When we had dial-up, the router and firewall would drop us quite often, but with the new equipment, our service is stabilized and we don’t have the problem of constantly having to restart the computers.”

Malta takes third as a team; second in relay competition

The Malta Swim Team took third place overall at the Glasgow Swim Meet this past weekend and finished second overall in the relay competition.

Kevin Henry, 9-10 midget boys, and Kooper Oxarart, 8 and under bantam boys, both earned high point honors for the Malta team.

Malta also picked up four first-place finishes in the relay events.

Malta Post Office hopes to be in the new building by July 1

July 1 is the tentative date local postal officials hope to move into their new facility located less than a block away at the intersection of Second Street and First Avenue, or 207 S 1st Ave. E.

A final inspection of the new facility is scheduled for today (Wednesday). If the building is accepted at that time by postal officials, the moving date will be Saturday.

Malta Postmaster Jan LaFond said the new facility has about twice as much square footage as the current building and about 300 post office boxes have been added.

Post office box holders in Malta who have combination boxes will no longer have to remember combinations because every box at the new facility will have a keyed lock. Combination boxes have become obsolete, according to LaFond..

Voice Mail offered by company

Voice Mail has been added to the long list of telecommunications services offered by Nemont Telephone Cooperative, Inc. and its subsidiary, Valley Telecommunications, Inc., according to an announcement made Monday, June 24, by General Manager Richard Thronson.

Voice Mail is a business or home answering service that will answer the phone, play a personal greeting and collect a caller’s message in a private, easy-to-use mailbox. The service will also answer the phone and take incoming messages even when the phone is in use.

New Owner for Keith’s Conoco

Ted Hansen has purchased Keith’s Conoco Station from Keith Holmes. Hansen took over the station on July 1 and has changed the name of the business to Ted’s Conoco Service.

Hansen is a native of Denver, Colorado, where he and his family have been residing.

Mrs. Hansen is the former Sharon Mangis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Mangis of the Bennett Lake community. They have two daughters, April, 6, and Amy, 4.

Keith Holmes will continue to operate his bus service in Malta.

Local Women Bowlers Score Well at Billings

The prize list for the 1971 Montana Woman’s Bowling Association championship tournament held in Billings includes several women from this area.

In the A division, Ada Totman of Malta received a trophy and $10 for the high individual series in a team event. She also tied for 70th place winning $3.25.

The Great Northern Lounge team of Malta was sixth in B division team standings and received $65.

Ada Totman and her daughter, Cindy Scott, were 41st in the B doubles event and received $10.

In the B singles event, Mary Mans of Malta shared 36th Place for a $9 prize.

The Gambles team came in 19th place in the C team event to win $55.

Violet Green of Malta was 22nd in the C singles event for a $15 prize; Marcia Miller tied for 72nd place for $7; Joyce Wright shared 125th place for $2.81, and Lulu Benzinger shared 134th place for $2.50.

The Valley Drug team tied for 22nd place in the D team event to win $34.

Eunice Caton and Betty Porter of Saco shared 18th place in the D doubles event for $20.

In the D singles event, Loretta Patrick of Wagner shared 30th place for $8; Pamela Whitaker of Saco was 53rd for $6; Arleda Kolczak shared 60th place for $5, and Ralpha Smith shared 89th place for $2.58.

Gayle Hammond and Pamela Whitaker of Saco were third in the E doubles event for a prize of $50, and Shirley Marsh and Irene Brown of Malta were 11th to claim a prize of $20.

News Shop Is Damaged By Fire

The normally calm and smooth running atmosphere of a country newspaper was rudely disturbed around the Phillips County News shop at 9:15 last Friday morning when a fire broke out in the combination paper storehouse and stereotyping room. Due to the efforts of the Malta fire department, the blaze was stopped in its tracks and kept out of the main shop, so that damage, while heavy, was confined to newsprint and miscellaneous paper supplies used in publishing and commercial printing.

Coming as it did, at the busiest period of the news month, operations were thrown into confusion, but newspaper friends at Glasgow, Hinsdale and Havre leaped into the breach and supplied us with enough paper to meet our schedule and also with the willing hands it required to get the job done. We were able to go ahead with the publication of the monthly newspaper of the Montana American Legion, circulation 18,000, and also complete election work required by Phillips County for the July primary.

Fire casualties numbered two. First was C.A. Christianson, shop foreman, who was compelled to quit work for a few days to rid his system of smoke he inhaled; the other was a member of the fire department who climbed a ladder and peered into a window just in time to receive the full blast of the fire hose in his face. Only his dignity was injured.

South Wagner Softball Team Wins From Malta

The South Wagner Women’s softball team defeated the Malta women’s team in a game at the Southside field last Sunday by a score of 52 to 30.

-The protestant churches of Malta had decided to form a Community church. The Rev. T.F. Rucker had called a mass meeting of the citizenry to consider the matter of amalgamating the churches.

-Eighth-grade graduates in the county included Henry Secrest, Clif Camp, Merrill Wilson, Helen Ekedahl, Alvera Swanson, Hubert Simms, Eddie Field, and Tom Hould.

-Fred L. Robinson and Ray Gardner were representing the local Legion post at the state convention in Lewistown.

-Malta elevators were preparing for a bumper crop harvest

-Work was resumed on the Bowdoin oil and gas well and drillers reported they were down 2,500 feet.

-A band of Cree Indians had passed through Malta on their way to a pow-wow at Fort Assinniboine.

-The children attending the Fort Belknap Indian School had prepared a program and were to have a picnic featuring races and games.

-The Malta school children enjoyed a picnic.

-B. Davenport, T.F. Johnson, L.M. Guthrie, and A.S. Bachues had organized the Malta Cattle Company.

-An all-night lunch stand was opened next door to the Malta hotel on the north side.
