M-ettes Play In Round Robin Tournament

The Malta M-ettes basketball team found some top-notch competition on Friday, June 18, at the Malta Gymnasium.

The round robin tournament consisted of four teams including Malta, who finished fourth in last season's Class B state tournament. The other teams were the top three teams in last year's Class C state tourney. Fort Benton, the Class C state champs. North Country, who finished second, and Roy-Winifred who finished third.

Malta's Head Coach Nate Hammond said, "We were fortunate to get some really quality teams here in Malta! Coach Erickson (North Country) organized the day and we just hosted it."

The M-ettes went 1-2 in the tourney. Losing the first game to North Country by 4, 28-32, and their third game to Roy-Winifred by a single point on a last-second shot, 39-40. Malta got a win in between those two games over Fort Benton by a score of 63-49.

Assistant Coach for Malta, Shane Anderson said, "The girls got some really good experience today. We have some things to work on, but today was all about the experience."

Coach Hammond added, "We had some close games and those one or two-point games are so valuable, win or lose."

North Country went 3-0 on the day with wins over Roy-Winifred by one point, 28-27, and over Fort Benton, 49-31, as well as the four-point win over Malta.

Roy-Winifred went 2-1 and Fort Benton went 0-3 on the day.

Malta Gymnasium will be busy again this coming weekend with both the Mustangs and M-ettes in action.
