Country Showdown Spotlights Local Community Talent, Draws Large Crowd
In front of a packed high school auditorium, singer/songwriter Nate Salsbery stepped on stage to perform in the KMMR Country Showdown and let the audience in on a secret: he’s really talented.
Performing two original songs, Salsbery took first place, garnering him $500 and a spot at the state Showdown in Great Falls, MT.
Originally from Malta, Salsbery has spent the last ten years honing a talent many locals had no idea existed.
But the 32-year-old said he always wanted to perform in front of Malta.
“It was a really amazing experience, the other talent was outstanding,” Salsbery said. “It was truly an honor to win the subjective vote.”

Museum of Rockies, Horner, start work to recover rare find
Uniquely preserved dinosaur discovered by Nate Murphy
A member of the hadrosaur family of dinosaurs is being recovered from Bureau of Land Management land about 20 miles north of Malta.
A crew from the Museum of the Rockies, Montana State University, Bozeman, led by Curator of Paleontology Jack Horner and Chief Preparer Bob Harman, is excavating the hadrosaur.
While hadrosaur remains are not uncommon, this particular skeleton is rare because it appears to be intact. Since the bones were not scattered by scavengers or natural forces such as water, it is assumed that the dinosaur died and was quickly buried by sediment where Malta resident Nate Murphy discovered it millions of years later.
Malta board hires 2 new teachers; okays computers purchase
Malta school trustees hired two new teachers recently; made appointments to the board of a new foundation and authorized the purchase of about 24 new computers for the business education department.
Meeting last week, board members approved the hiring of Jeff Stott of Saco to teach social studies next year in the high school and junior high. Stott had been teaching at Saco School. He was recently awarded a James Madison Fellowship which he will use to pursue advanced studies in history.
The board also approved hiring Matt Krahe of Choteau as a science teacher for the coming school year. A first-year teacher, Krahe’s father has taught science in Choteau for many years. Krahe was also a state champion wrestler and is a graduate of Choteau High School.
Supt. Bill Parker suggested that Krahe’s hiring will balance out Choteau’s recent hiring of former Malta wrestling coach Steve French. French has accepted a teaching and coaching position at Choteau.

Fish Derby Winners
Dan Lowney won first prize in the fish derby sponsored by the Phillips County Wildlife Association last Sunday at Nelson Reservoir. His winning catch was a two-pound, four-ounce walleye, earning him a new rod and reel. About 75 participated in the derby. Phil Sims was chairman of the derby.
Dick Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wally Henry, won the hard-luck prize in the fish derby, a crying towel, a can of sardines, and a fisherman’s de-liar. He was presented with his prizes by Dick Dale, secretary of the wildlife association. Dale Edmister, a fisherman of wide renown and a great reputation among a certain group of fishing devotees, was awarded second prize in the derby for a one-pound, 11-ounce walleye he landed single-handedly from Nelson’s waters. He won a new tackle box.

Oilers and G.I.’s Challenge All-Stars To Friday Game
“Oilers” from the Young Exploration Company and G.I.’s from the Malta Prisoner of War camp have challenged the Malta All-Stars to an extracurricular game in Trafton Park Friday at 6 p.m.
To make the game interesting, Malta is lending the challengers the J. Campbell-D. Edwards battery combination while J. Hotz and Lodge will oppose them. Local fans are anticipating an interesting game and are hoping it will uncover some heretofore hidden baseball talent. If it compares with the baseball-style of “Chuck” Harradon of the P.O.W. camp, both in pitching and at-bat, a good game is assured, they say.
