M-ettes sending 13 to State B
On to state!
The Malta M-ettes have reclaimed the Northern B Track and Field Divisional title last Saturday in Glasgow, outscoring 11 other teams present at the meet.
The M-ettes qualified 13 athletes to compete at the 2021 State B Track Meet set to start on Thursday, May 27, and conclude on Saturday, May 29.
The M-ettes scored a total of 99 points to win the Northern B title, a title that they also won in 2019, the last year before COVID-19 shut down spring sports across the country.
The top six teams included Conrad, who was second with 83.5 points, Choteau who was third with 65.5, Glasgow who took fourth with 62.5, Wolf Point who was fifth with 55, and Great Falls Central who was sixth with 45.
The M-ettes were led by Erica Smith who qualified in four individual events including wins in the long jump and triple jump events. She had a season's best of 34-0.25 in her second to last jump in the finals, a mark that won the event. She had a leap of 15-8.25 in long jump.
"I am excited," Smith said. "I really feel like I have another PR in me and it is going to be at state, I know it."
She was asked about qualifying in javelin, an event dear to her sister, Malta Head Coach Kaitlyn Smith's heart.
"She is definitely a great javelin thrower," Erica said. "I'm probably not going to live up to what she achieved, but hopefully I will get close."
Madison Williamson was third in triple jump with a mark of 31-10.50.
She was also fourth in javelin with a throw of 102-9 and fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.87 seconds.
The M-ettes took the top three spots in the shot put competition, with Tia Siewing winning the event with a personal best of 35-02, Giona Lamb was second with a personal best of 32-03.50, and in third was Lauren Tuss posting a personal best of 31-08.25.
"It's pretty cool for us," Tuss said. "We are excited. We have been doing different drills at practice... We have all improved."
Tuss said that she was excited to qualify for state and that it was a good feeling.
Malta also scored nine points in discus with Skylie Lefdahl placing second with a throw of 104-05, Tuss taking third with a throw of 90-10, and Rylee Hines placing fifth with a personal best of 84-05.
Allison Kunze qualified in all three of her individual events, placing third in the 200 with a time of 28.27, third in long jump with a mark left at 15.25, and sixth in triple jump with a length of 30-7.
Gracie Honey qualified for state in the 800, taking third in the event with a time of 2:30.91, a new best by five seconds.
"That was my goal this year, so I am happy, really happy," Honey said. "I just started running super fast in the beginning and I almost tripped, but I just tried catching the person in front of me and kept going."
Addy Anderson qualified in both hurdle events, taking sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.04 and sixth in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 53.40.
Both of Malta's relay teams qualified for state. The short relay consisting of Leslie Young, Smith, Kunze, and Williamson took fifth with a time of 54.42. The long relay consisting of Addison Ulrich, Williamson, Honey, and Kunze was fifth with a time of 4:28.47.
