The Malta Mustangs displayed plenty of strength at the 2021 Northern B Divisional, placing sixth while also sweeping all three throwing events.
The Mustangs were sixth out of six teams present at the Northern B with 41 points. Fairfield won the meet with 114 points, Wolf Point was second with 103 points, Cut Bank was third with 70 points, Glasgow was fourth with 55 points, and Conrad was fifth with 45 points.
The Mustangs are sending five athletes to the State B Track and Field meet on Thursday, May 27.
At the Northern B, the Mustangs were led by junior Cash Salsbery who took first place in the shot put and discus events.
Salsbery posted a throw of 45-7 in shot put and a throw of 141-04 in discus.
"I hit some decent throws but I think I can still improve," Salsbery said. "It felt good though."
Salsbery said that he was happy to be able to compete against his good friend, Mark Doty of Conrad, who took second in the shot put event.
"We went head to head in shot put and I like that," Salsbery said.
Salsbery believes that he is almost throwing at his best, but he has to work on keeping his core coiled until he launches his throws.
Teammate and fellow junior, Rex Williamson, set a best of 153-02 in javelin, a new personal best which won the event. Williamson also qualified in triple jump by posting a mark of 38-04.50.
Williamson said that it felt pretty good to be able to compete at state in triple jump.
He took second at the 2B meet, in his first time competing in triple jump.
"I surprised myself," Williamson said.
He also said to improve at state, he needs to work on healing his hamstring which has been bothering him late in the season.
David Pittman also qualified in two events, taking fourth place in discus and shot put. He had a throw of 127-10 in discus and a throw of 41-11.50.
The team's short relay team qualified for state by placing fifth with a time of 47.84. The short relay team consists of Salsbery, Kyle Darrington, Williamson, and Gavin Slade.
The long relay team just missed qualifying for state, posting a time of 3:55.58. The long relay team consisted of RC Skiff, Connor Tuss, Darrington, and Slade.
Camryn Mears was close to qualifying in the 110 Hurdles by posting a time of 18.79, but the time was good enough for seventh in the event.
