Crowder Files for Council Seat
Incumbent alderman William “Bill” Crowder has filed for re-election in Ward II in the Malta municipal election. Crowder filed as a Republican.
The filing period for municipal elections is currently underway. Malta has two seats up for election.
The other seat is currently held by alderman Garry Adams.
The deadline for filing for office is June 30 at 5 p.m. Candidates can file in the Clerk and Recorder’s Office at the courthouse
10 Structures Being Razed in City
It’s out with the old and in with the new perhaps in Malta.
Ten old homes within the city limits of Malta are scheduled to be razed this summer, according to Public Works Director John Demarais.
Demarais said city workers are inspecting the 10 structures scheduled for demolition to check for any hazardous materials.
He also said the owners are also being informed not to bring the debris to the landfill on weekends because there is no staff available to run heavy equipment used to push the debris into a pit.

Mustang Wrestling Camp; Top Coach, National Champ
This year’s Mustang Wrestling Camp will feature a clinician who is a three-time All-American for Bloomsburg University plus a 134-pound national champion coached by him, according to Malta wrestling coach Steve French.
The featured clinician is Rocky Bonomo, assistant coach at Lock Haven University, PA since 1990. Bonomo has coached 11 NCAA Division I All-Americans and one national champion. He has coached 53 NCAA Division I tournament qualifiers.
Bonomo was the featured clinician at the 1995 National High School Wrestling Championships at Pittsburgh which Malta state champion Justin Lamb was invited to attend. He was accompanied by Coach French.
Demarais Announces Bid for State Senate
Debra “Debbie” Demarais has thrown her hat into the ring as a Democratic candidate for State Senate District 37. She is running unopposed in the June primary election.
Demarais was born and raised in Malta and is the daughter of Delmar and Sharon Demarais.
A single mother, Demarais said her decision to run was influenced by her daughter, Katrina, and other children “because what we do today will have an impact on them.”

Copple Auto in Mishap
A car driven by William Francis Copple of Saco was damaged in the amount of about $550 as the result of an accident on old Highway 2, three miles west of Saco. The accident occurred at 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 16.
Copple was not injured except for a few minor cuts. He was headed west when he lost control of the car. It went into the left borrow pit and rolled over onto its top. He was alone in the car.
Hill Won H.S. Golf
Allen Hill won the first place trophy in the Malta High School golf tournament held Saturday at the SBRA course. His score was 102 for 18 holes, with 51 on both rounds. Tim Long was a close second with rounds of 48 and 55 for a total of 103.
Brian Robertson came in third with scores of 55 and 49 for 104. Rob Wiprud was fourth and Bob Judge and David Clausen tied for fifth place.
Hill also won the prize for coming closest to the pin on number 3, and Long was closest to the pin on 8. Robertson had the longest drive on 5, and Judge the longest drive on 2.
A 36-hole tournament for members of the Malta faculty concluded Sunday. John Douglas and Clair Garrick won trophies for first and second respectively in scratch games. Ray Harris won the first-place trophy and Richard Sanders, second, in the handicap series.
M.H.S. Graduation is Monday
Two former Malta High School graduates will share the speaking honors at the commencement exercises for the class of 1971 on Monday, May 24, at 8 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
The speakers are Roger Jacobson and Jim Watts. Jacobson graduated from Malta in 1964 and is a sophomore at the College of Great Falls.
Watts, a Vietnam veteran, graduated from high school in 1964 and from Northern Montana College in 1969.

Governor Ford Proclaims May 12 Mother’s Day
Gov. Sam C. Ford formally proclaimed May 12 as Mother’s Day with a plea for “earnest observance and flying of the American flag wherever feasible.”
“Whereas the occasion this year has assumed added significance, marking the first Mother’s Day since the ravaging guns of World War II were quieted, I urge all children and all adults fortunate enough to have the opportunity to give the day earnest observance as will fully carry out significant purpose.” The Governor said.
Annual Sports Day Program Tomorrow
Grade Schools in County Invited To Malta
Athletes from every grade school in the county are expected to be in Malta tomorrow (Friday) for the third annual Sports Day. The Sports Day is sponsored by the Malta Kiwanis club, the Malta Commercial club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.
The program will start at 1:30 at the high school athletic field and will consist of dashes, jumps and baseball throws for each grade.
Members of the Kiwanis club will be in charge of the sports program and the refreshments which will consist of sandwiches, ice cream, and soft drinks.
Cash prizes for first, second, and third places for all events will be awarded. The Mustang band will be on hand to furnish pep music for the events.

- The American Legion had announced the Memorial Day program with Rev. T.F. Rucker as principal speaker. The parade to the cemetery was to be headed by a color guard, firing squad, G.A.R. veterans, World War veterans, Spanish American War veterans, fraternal organizations, Campfire Girls, and Boy Scouts.
- The graduating class of 1921 included Georgia Tressler, Edna Robinson, Gayle Johnson, Verna Erickson, Marguerite Gagen, Viola Pancake, Ada Town, Gladys Hoverson, Eugenia Zabell, Fred Bickford, Walter Henry, Emma Smith, Jeanne Plouffe, Ileen Smith, Etta Stearns, and Leona McCreary.
- There had been 2.02 inches of rainfall up to May 12.
- The businessmen of Malta worked all day at the new Trafton Park, cutting rose brush and raking and hauling refuse. Two tractors were used to make a race track and baseball diamond.

- Mrs. E.A. LaRock, who had been severely beaten up by her husband, had filed suit for divorce asking for $200 a month alimony. She claimed he was worth $25,000.
- W.J. Tressler was at work on a new home for Mr. and Mrs. William McLellan.
- The local bartenders and the young men “who have to work for a living” were scheduled to play a game of baseball.
- The Survant, Edwards, and McLellan homes in the southwest corner of town had been completed and the neighborhood had an aristocratic air until Homer Smith erected a $100 shack across the street.
- William McGuiness had shipped in 600 two-year-old steers and a car of registered Hereford bulls.
- Sheepmen were reporting a poor lambing season.
- The tin roof on the A. Davidson ranch home was blown off in a high wind.
- Dr. G.W. Clay was having a hot and cold water system installed in his home.
Surveys were being made of the proposed Dodson irrigation ditch.
