Wrestlers head to Eastern BC

The Malta Mustangs Wrestling team had divided results in their two mixers last week, going 2-9 at Fergus on Tuesday, February 16, and then 14-13 in the two-day mixer at Choteau last weekend, for their final prep match of the regular season.

The Mustangs will head to Glasgow on Friday for the two-day Eastern B/C Divisional Meet scheduled to start on Friday, February 26, and end on Saturday, February 27.

When asked about how the team is feeling heading into divisionals, Malta Head Coach Jake French said it’s going to be interesting to see how the wrestlers react. They haven’t been in any tournament-style meets this year at all. It’s going to be new for them, and the coaches as well.

At the Fergus Mixer, though short on wins, Malta’s outing was highlighted by two exciting matches; Colton Mears won his match in overtime 4-2 against Carson Nelson of Lewistown. That match was followed by Camryn Mears pinning Jeff Boyce of Lewistown in 2:51.

“Fergus is a really tough, good team.” Coach French said on the rough outing. “But that’s who you want to go up against. You want to see where you are and get better. Steel sharpens steel.”

The Mustangs traveled to Choteau this past weekend for a two-day mixer.

Co. Mears won by decision 17-15 against Kaleb Bean of Simms in what was selected as the most exciting match of the week. He followed that up with a pin in his second match of day one over Beau Pearce of Fairfield in 2:44.

Camryn Mears won his first match of the day by major decision 14-2 against Miguel Perez of Fairfield. He won his second match by pinning Kaleb Bean of Simms in 2:41.

Colt French went 2-0 on day one also. Winning his first match by decision 1-0 over Cael Giles of Fairfield. In his second match, he pinned Giavante Evans of Fairfield in 3:24.

Shawn Gilkerson won his first match of the day pinning Marshall Kunkel of Simms in 5:45.

Jaden Keeling got into the win column as well pinning his first opponent Isaac Lauver from Fairfield in 1:57.

Cameron Mikesell got day two off with a bang by pinning his first opponent, Drew Knoll of Arlee, in 29 seconds earning him the Quick Pin of the week.

Gilkerson added another victory to the Mustang’s win column by pinning Drew Knoll of Arlee in 3:16.

Colt French added his third win of the meet when he pinned Gus Lee of Choteau in 1:33.

Jaden Keeling got his second win of the meet by decision over Jacob Major of Choteau 6-5.

Camryn Mears picked up two more wins on day two winning his first match by major decision 12-4 over Percy Bechtold of Choteau. He got his second win via pinfall over Kade Kindler of Choteau in 5:06.

Malta coaches choose Camryn for Wrestler of the Week honors for his record of 5-1 over both the Fergus and Choteau meets and for showing great leadership skills.
