M-ettes, Mustangs head into postseason as top seeds

The Malta Mustangs and M-ettes each ended the regular season as Conference Champions in their respective leagues. The M-ettes will head to Poplar for the 2B Girls District Tournament, while the Mustangs will travel to Wolf Point for the 2B Boys District Tournament this week. Both teams set to start their respective games at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 26.

According to Malta Public Schools, tickets for the 2021 District 2B Basketball Tournaments must be purchased at the tournament sites. Single Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for students. Spectator Guidelines are listed on page 4B of the PCN.

M-ettes

The Malta M-ettes Basketball team ended the 2020-21 season with a pair of dominant wins last week, as the team secured their Conference Championship, heading into the 2B District Tournament this weekend in Poplar.

The team will enjoy a first round bye, and will face the winner of game one, which will feature a battle between Harlem and Poplar set to begin on Thursday, February 25.

On the other side of the bracket, Glasgow and Wolf Point will play on Thursday, at 7 p.m. in semifinal action.

On Tuesday, February 16, the M-ettes defeated the Harlem Wildcats 73-46 in Malta and then Wolf Point 62-37 on Saturday, February 20, in Wolf Point.

In the team’s win over Harlem, the team was led by Justine Lamb, who had a 17 point, 14 rebound double-double. Lamb also made all three of her free throw attempts.

Allison Kunze had 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Maddie Williamson had 12 points, four steals and four rebounds. Addy Anderson had 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Brylee French had seven points, Kylie Hunter had six points, Kylee Nelson had four points, Lauren Tuss had two points, and Erica Smith had 1.

In the M-ettes win over the Lady Wolves, Kunze led Malta with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and three steals. Hunter had 12 points and seven rebounds. Maddie Williamson had 11 points and three steals, Anderson had ten points and nine rebounds, and Nelson had seven points.

Mustangs

The Malta Mustangs will take on the winner of the Wolf Point and Poplar game set to start on Thursday, February 25. Malta's game will start on Friday, February 26.

The Mustangs fell 74-46 to the Harlem Wildcats on Tuesday, February 16, but the team went on to win their season finale over Wolf Point, 47-30, clinching their spot as the conference champions, and securing a first round bye in the 2B Tourney.

In Malta’s win, the team was led by Pierce Mortenson who scored 15 points. Kooper Oxarart and Connor Tuss each had 10 points. Rex Williamson had eight points, Jared Eggebrecht had to points and Darrow Messerly had one point.

In their loss to Harlem, Williamson had 18 points, Tuss had 11 points, and Oxarart had nine points.

Harlem’s RJ Ramone had a game-high of 34 points.
