Talk show host guest speaker for PhilCo banquet

PhilCo Economic Growth Council announces their annual meeting for 2011 will be held on Feb. 22, in the new banquet room at the Great Northern Hotel. Special recognition will be given to businesses and entrepreneurs for their accomplishments in Phillips County for 2010. At this year's program will be guest speaker Aaron Flint. Flint is the host of the popular statewide talk show "Voices of Montana," and the editor of the daily online news and commentary blog 'The Flint Report."

M-ettes been here before

Seems like they've been here before. The M-ettes cap an undefeated 2B Conference record with wins over Glasgow and Wolf Point. Now they have to get themselves to do it all over again as the conference district tournament opens Thursday in Malta. Of course, everyone is trying not to look ahead to another match up between the M-ettes and the Fairfield Lady Eagles, who should breeze to the championship in District 1B. Malta gets a first round by at district and will play either Harlem or Plentywood Friday at 1 p.m. "Plentywood and Harlem beat each other once so who knows here on a neutral floor" said M-ette Coach Terry Lindgren. Coach Lindgren likes the intensity his team is playing with at the start of the games and to open the third quarter as well. "I think we are playing pretty well," he added.

Lamb gets help from big bro' to win title

Malta's newly crowned Class B-C heavyweight champion Landon Lamb had an advantage over his competitors at the state tournament that few people have known about, even Mustang fans. When Landon earned his championship Saturday at the Metra in Billings, he continued a legacy left behind by his brother Justin, who was a two-time undefeated heavyweight champion the prior two seasons for Malta. That is where Landon's advantage was. Justin, living in Malta while waiting to transfer to Dillon University, practiced and tutored the youngest of four Lamb brothers for most of the wrestling season.

MDU Foundation gives $ 1,000 grant to hospital

Jerry Tveter, division manager with the Montana Dakota Utilities Company in Bismarck N.D. announced recently that the MDU Resources Foundation has provided a $1,000 grant to Phillips County Hospital to help with the purchase of a much-needed x-ray machine for the community

Canada Geese Appeared Briefly At Bowdoin

People were not the only ones experiencing spring fever during the recent warm spell. Four hardy Canada geese put in a brief appearance over Bowdoin Refuge on Wednesday, Feb 17. Refuge manager John Foster reports "the geese made a few low circles over the ice bound lake, then left for parts unknown."

District Tourney Starts Today...

District 4B tournament action begins in Havre today and the Malta Mustangs enter the tournament undefeated. The Mustangs ended the regular season play last Friday evening with 20 wins and no losses. It is the second outstanding record for the Malta team, as last year the Mustangs won 31 games against 1 loss. The 3M Company starts the tournament this afternoon by meeting Chester in the first game at 2 P.M. in the Northern Montana College Gym.

Rites for Saco Pioneer Held Last Sunday

Robert Abel Died Feb. 7 At Home Of Daughter

Funeral services were held at the Saco Lutheran Church Sunday for Robert Abel, 88, one of Saco's oldest settlers. Abel, born in Germany, January 15, 1858, came to the Saco community 65 years ago. His ranch was in Valley County at the time. He built up a fine herd of cattle; his range beef topping the Chicago markets for years. Mid- western stockmen rated his steers with the best cornfed Iowa cattle. The Saco pioneer was known throughout northern Montana for his hospitality, and many a traveler stopped at the Abel ranch while making a long trip by horse drawn wagon or "democrat."
