One Nation, Under God
The Malta M-ettes basketball team picked up a pair of wins last weekend, defeating Glasgow in Malta last Thursday and Rocky Boy last Saturday, in Rocky Boy.
The M-ettes are scheduled to face Class C's Froid-Lake Redhawks on Friday, February 5, at 5:30 p.m., at the Malta High Gymnasium.
Malta then will travel to Roundup to face the Lady Panthers at 5 p.m., on Saturday, February 6.
The team is currently 5-1. Team Captain Kylie Hunter, a senior, was asked how she felt the season was going.
"Pretty good," Hunter said. "I think that we have a great team and we just have so much support through our bench. When we come off, we know that others are going to be there. It is amazing."
The team hasn't had as many games as other teams, but they have been growing along the way.
"We all have confidence in each other," M-ette Justine Lamb said. "We just keep pushing through, try our hardest, and never give up."
According to Lamb and Hunter, the M-ette Varsity and sub-varsity teams run more during practices this season to help with their conditioning.
In Malta's win over Glasgow, the team was dominant on the boards racking up 18 offensive rebounds and scoring 24 second-chance points.
Lamb led the charge for the M-ettes scoring 17 points.
"The key to our win was that we kept playing hard and pushing forward through everything," Lamb said.
Lamb also had nine rebounds. Allison Kunze had a 15 point, 13 rebound double-double, and two blocks. Maddie Williamson had 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Addy Anderson had nine points and seven rebounds. Aubri Werk scored 4 points. Brylee French had three points. Hunter had three points and a game-high six assists. Kylee Nelson had two points and six rebounds. Erica Smith had four steals and two points.
Malta started strong, outscoring Glasgow 7-0 at the beginning of the game. The team finished the first quarter with a 25-10 lead.
Glasgow fought to stay in the game, keeping pace with the M-ettes in the second quarter. Malta and Glasgow both scored 11 points in the second quarter and the Lady Scotties outscored Malta 11-10 in the third period.
Malta was able to hold on to their lead, outscoring Glasgow 19-10, thanks to hard work on the offensive boards and a few buckets from Werk and French who hyped the crowd with their efforts.
The M-ettes were asked what their approach would be to facing Rocky Boy, whom they hadn't seen this season.
"We know that we have to just get there, sprint down the court, and work as a team," Hunter said.
In Malta's win over Rocky Boy, the M-ettes were led by Kunze who scored 17 points, Nelson had 16 points, Anderson had 13 points, Hunter had 11 points, Williamson had seven points, Smith had six points, Lamb had four points, Tuss had two points, Werk had two points, and French had one point.
The M-ettes jumped out to a dominant start outscoring Rocky Boy 24-12 in the first quarter, and did not lose stride, outsourcing the Northern Stars 19-3 in the second quarter, 19-12 in the third quarter, and 17-2 in the fourth quarter.
