Legion groups donate towards upgrades needed by Phillips County 4H Shooting Sports

American Legion groups donated towards upgrades needed by Phillips County 4H Shooting Sports.

James Barnard and the other instructors of the Phillips County Shooting Sports presented a list of repair parts needed, consumable items needed, archery products wanted, and new guns wanted to purchase so the kids could better compete against others at the state competition. Both the Post's and the Squadron's members voted to support their needs. Even though the Post's Annual Garage Sale this past spring was canceled due to Covid 19, we received some proceeds from Greg Kirkwood for the help in setting up and help run his late spring yard sale. We also did fairly good on the annual raffles we held. As the pandemic caused cancellations of many travel plans and gatherings, we haven't been approached much for help in individuals or organizational needs. Our meetings are at 6 pm on the third Tuesday of the month, so bring your requests to us then, or write a request.

Many of the local people see us as the honor guards at military funerals, but like many other individuals and groups, we are involved in other duties and pursuits such as lowering and raising flags per government direction; DAV drivers to take veterans to their VA appointments; keeping outdoor flags in presentable condition; properly disposing of flags when they get in bad shape; keeping fatality crosses along the highways in proper condition; and locating and remembering our county veteran's burial places on Memorial Day, etc.

This past week we honored another veteran at his funeral, and also another for the bugler of our Post. This individual was an active Sons of the American Legion member and is the second member we've lost way too early as our Squadron is less than 4 years old.

If you are a veteran, we invite you to join Post 57. If one of your ancestors was a veteran please join Squadron 57. You can do either by calling Ken Wiederrick at 399-3944 or reaching out to Ken Ruzicka-Post 57 Historian.
