One Nation, Under God

A well needed escape

I am relieved that the sports season started.

I am relieved that the sports season started.

I know that COVID-19 has changed many aspects of the sporting events including the amount of spectators that can attend, the encouragement of wearing masks and keeping your hands clean, but the athletes are able to compete. For that, I am thankful.

Our kids are doing well this season. Several teams are still without a loss in their first three weeks of basketball, which is a testament to the resilience of our community, coupled with the hard work that the athletes and coaches put in every day.

This season, the wrestlers will be able to compete at home in four dual meets. Because all weights are not present in the dual format, the team is already set back by at least 12 points in each meet. The group knows about the handicap that they give to opposing teams, but in every match I saw last Friday, the wrestlers fought hard and made the event very competitive.

The thing that I love about my job is that it takes my mind away from the current state of our country. Those that know me, know that I have never been fond of our two-party system. There are more than two types of people in the world, yet the sides have people fighting to the death for their “brand.”

Things haven’t been easy mentally for me in the political realm. I’m sick of the hate. Sporting events take my mind, and hopefully many minds, away from political drama and nonsense.

My family has been well in health and we have been blessed to be busy. My thoughts and prayers are with people going through tough times during this pandemic. Not everyone is blessed to be working. There are a lot of people suffering in health and that does make me feel bad. I pray that there is peace for those going through the struggles caused by this pandemic and ugly political climate.

I understand that there is more to life than sports, but I am thankful that watching, listening, and or reading about these athletes gives our minds an escape from the nonsense. Our kids are doing well this season.
