Lady Mavericks now off to 4-0 start

The North Country Lady Mavericks have started the season 4-0 after picking up wins over Glasgow, Scobey, and Dodson in consecutive nights last week.

"It was a great weekend of basketball for the Lady Mavericks having to play three nights in a row and being able to come out with three wins," Lady Mavericks Head Coach Amber Erickson said. "The girls are getting after it on both ends of the floor and doing a great job of being unselfish and hitting the open player for the best shot. I am looking forward to the rest of the season."

The team posted a 49-33 victory over the Class B Glasgow Lady Scotties in Glasgow on Thursday, January 7.

The Lady Mavs were led by Jaycee Erickson who had 19 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Kaitlin McColly had 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Paige Wasson had six points and five rebounds. Kia Wasson had five points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

"We came out and got after it in our full-court defense," Coach Erickson said. "We were able to control the tempo of the game pretty much all the way through. I felt like that tempo and our pressure defense got them flustered and really paid off in the first and fourth quarters for us."

On Friday, January 8, the Lady Mavericks defeated Scobey 41-36 in Hinsdale.

The team was led by K. Wasson who had 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Teagan Erickson had 10 points and four rebounds. McColly had eight points, six rebounds, and three assists. P. Wasson had six points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Coach Erickson said that the Lady Mavs faced early foul trouble, so the team was forced out of their full-court press.

"The girls were pretty amped up since it has been several years since we have been able to beat Scobey," Coach Erickson said. "Defensively, we were solid but did not do a very good job of talking which is something we have made a point to get better at this year. Kaitlyn did an amazing job of hounding Scobey's best player Gracee Lekvold all night."

Coach Erickson said that North Country struggled to relax on offense in the first half, but the team found their stride in the second half.

"Late in the 3rd quarter we were able to take the lead with some big shots, pushing the ball in transition and offensive rebounds," Coach Erickson said. "Teagan stepped up to the line and knocked down two big free throws with less than 20 seconds to go to put us up by five.

Coach Erickson said that free throws were big for her team in the win. They made 13-of-16 (81%) attempts at the charity stripe.

The Lady Mavs defeated the Dodson Lady Coyotes 71-19 in Whitewater on Saturday, January 9.

Whitewater was led by K. Wasson who had 17 points, five rebounds, five steals, and four assists. J. Erickson had 17 points, three steals and two assists. McColly had 13 points, P. Wasson had 10 points, and Teagan Erickson had eight points and seven rebounds.

"We came out ready to play and get after it defensively," Coach Erickson said. "We made them work hard for every point."

Coach Erickson felt that her team had better communication against Dodson than in previous games this season.

Our tempo and defensive intensity lead to some great transition baskets," Coach Erickson said. "It was fun to be able to get everyone some quality minutes in this game."

The Dodson Lady Coyotes fell to Roy-Winifred one night prior, falling 58-24.

The Lady Coyotes were led by Melony Fetter who scored 10 points. Kataya KillEagle had seven points, Lindsey Fetter had four points and Imagin Fox had three points.

The Lady Mavericks are scheduled to host Lustre in Whitewater on Friday, January 15. The game is set to 6 p.m. after the conclusion of the JV Boys game set to start at 4:30 p.m.

The team then travels to Frazer on Saturday, January 16. The game against the Bearcubs starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Dodson Lady Coyotes have three games scheduled for this week. The Lady Coyotes are scheduled to travel to Nashua to face the Lady Porcupines on Thursday, January 14, at 6 p.m. The Lady Coyotes will then host Frazer for Homecoming and Senior Night on Friday, January 15, at 5:30 p.m. The final game of the week is scheduled to be in Lustre on Saturday, January 16, at 4 p.m.
