Mavericks split a pair of games

The North Country Mavericks Volleyball team split games this week, defeating the Circle Wildcats in a replacement game Thursday, October 8, and then falling to Froid/Medicine Lake in five sets on Friday, October 9.

In the win over Circle in Whitewater, the Mavericks were led by Kaitlyn McColly who had 13 kills, 22 digs, and one block. Kia Wasson had 12 kills, nine digs, and one block. Jaydyn Erickson had nine kills, three digs and two blocks. Jaycee Erickson had 14 assists, 12 assists, and four kills. Danika Soper had 17 assists and 11 digs.

"In this match, we had long rallies which were awesome. We battled back and forth and made some great saves and plays when we needed to," Coach Charlene Wasson said. "Circle is extremely scrappy so we had to vary our hits against them making it hard to tell what we were going to attack with. Our defense was solid throughout the match we struggled a bit from the service line but got the job done in four sets."

The scores of the game were: NC 25 - C 22, NC 25 - C 23, NC 20 - C 25, and NC 25 - C 15. The Mavericks picked up the game against Circle after their game with Wolf Point cancelled the game to make up other conference games.

North Country dropped a conference game against the Froid-Medicine RedHawks last Friday. The scores were: NC 25 - FML 17, NC 18 - FML 25, NC 25 - FML 18, NC 15 - FML 25, and NC 8 - FML 15.

"In this match, we really shot ourselves in the foot serving," Coach Wasson said. "We had 18 missed serves throughout the 5 sets. I feel like we did some great things defensively and offensively but taking that many points and just giving it to the other team makes it difficult to win a match."

The Mavs' loss puts them third in the conference standings behind Froid-Lake and Plentywood, who is in first place.

"We go into the next 2 weeks looking to stay there and finish the season strong," Coach Wasson said. "This wasn't the outcome we wanted to end the match with but it was the hand we dealt ourselves and were forced to play."

The Mavericks were led by Kia Wasson, who had 12 kills and 15 digs. McColly had 10 kills, 13 digs, and two blocks.
