One Nation, Under God

Pie Social to be held for Hinsdale Legion Monument

Residents and friends of Hinsdale are invited to a pie social to on Sunday, October 18th, from 2-5 p.m. to raise funds to repair the monument at Hinsdale’s Legion Park, or the Legion Hall in case of inclement weather.

For 75 years, the monument has stood as a prominent fixture in the Hinsdale community, reminding us of the sacrifices of our local veterans. The front side of the memorial was designated to those individuals who had been wounded or killed in combat, with their names placed on a “Bronze tablet.” Today, names are added to the monument as the American Legion Willie Nelson Post 45 is informed of a Veteran’s passing.

“Denham” is noted as the Legion member given “full authority to go ahead” with the Memorial, using “native rocks” in the June 4, 1945 meeting minutes. With the improvements including the planting of grass, trees, and the building of fence and sidewalks, the community celebrated with a Memorial Day dedication ceremony of the monument and park in 1957.

Community members have organized this event in hopes to raise $5,000 before Veteran’s Day to cover Legion Monument repair costs, and possibly add a cap to help shed rain, prolonging the life of the monument, which honors the lives of the veterans who have served our country.

A piece of pie will be sold for $19.45, a price that memorializes the year the monument was constructed. This price includes a monument souvenir. A whole pie can be purchased for $75 and is a great option for “Pie Social-distancing.”

Pre-orders for full pies are preferred and can be made by contacting Leona at Sweet Memories 406.364.2128 or Kristine at 406.263.5490. The committee is mindful of your health and notes that there will be plenty of room in the park or the hall. It is also possible to order a pie to be picked up or delivered if you are not comfortable being at a gathering.

Donations may be made to the American Legion Post 45, with a note of “Monument Repairs.”Contact Leona and Kristine are also available to answer any questions you might have.
