Though they had no idea what or how many entries to expect at the 105th Phillips County Fair in Dodson last week, the Phillips County Fair Board members who oversee the Open Class contests were pleasantly pleased with how things shook out.
"We are really tickled because we didn't think that we would have this many entries," Joy Linn, Phillips County Fair Board member told the PCN. "There were more than we had even hoped for, so we are thrilled."
A total of 617 entries were judges at this year Open Class (122 in grains, grass, vegetables, and fruit; 95 in floriculture; 123 in culinary, and 277 in needlework, art, and hobbies) and paid put a total of $2,026. At the 2019 Phillips County Fair, a total of $4,850 was paid out to a total of 2,046 entries.
The Top Exhibitors at this year's Phillips County Fair were Rose Teske, Saco, who earned $169; Jeanie Green, Whitewater, who earned $155; Erin Solberg, Malta, who earned 127; Loretta Menge, Saco, who earned $135, and Emma Solberg, Malta, who earned $121.
Teske took grand champ in Fruit Muffins, Sweet Clover, Herbs, Sweet Peas, and Potatoes and Reserve Champ in Chokecherries, and Gayfeather. Joy Linn (Grand Champ in the Agnes Young Memorial Angel Food Cake Award, Gran BBQ Sauce, Reserve Herbal Vinegar, and Reserve Black Beans), Melissa Hoffer (Grand Jacket, Grand Coconut cookies, Grand Moccasins, and Reserve Pajamas), June Mavencamp (Grand Tea Ring, Grand Filled Honey Cookies, Reserve Honey Oatmeal Cookies, and Reserve Banana Bread), Jeanie Green (Grand Blue Berry Pie, Grand Brown Eggs, Reserve White Eggs, and Reserve Wave Petunia), and Lena Tremblay (Grand Gluten-Free Cookies, Reserve Peach Pie, Reserve Pie, and Reserve Pound Cake) all earned four awards this year.
Premiums offered at the 2020 Phillips County Fair totaled $11,245 and 18-percent were paid out.
