One Nation, Under God
Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, children from the various Phillips County 4-H clubs converged on the Milk River Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday morning, kicking off the early events of the 105th Phillips County Fair.
Kayden Green, 11, was at the Pavilion bright and early for the horse shows on Saturday. He said this year marks the fifth that he has been in 4-H, competition in the horse show for three of those year. This year he was riding his horse, Red.
"The best I did here was two years ago when I took Judge's Choice," Green said. "My first year I also got Judges choice, but I am not sure how I will do. I'm just having fun, I have practiced, and I like riding and I do it at least twice a week."
Green will also be showing his pig, Franklin, who weighed in at 252-pounds the last time he hit the scale.
"He's nice," Green added.
Macey Blunt, age 13, was also at the Pavilion early getting ready for the day with her 21-year-old horse, Amber. She said she has been riding Amber for five years, adding that she is becoming "old and crabby."
"I did pretty good here last year, getting first in Horsemanship and Reserve in Showmanship," she said.
Blunt, who has been in 4-H for five years, also has a steer, Joe, she will be showing at the weekend's Phillips County Fair. Though she wasn't sure of his weight, and that the animal is kind of lazy.
"All he does is eat, drink, and sleep," she said.
Steeler Blunt, who graced the front page of the Phillips County News along with his 4-H Rough Rider buddies, was preparing to ride his horse, Coco, at the Pavilion on Saturday. He said Coco is 19-years-old and teamed together last year, the two won second in Horsemanship, First place in Showmanship, and also netted Judge's Choice.
"I don't have any expectations this year," he said. "I just like being with my horse and friends.
Steeler will also be showing a pig this year, affectionately know as Jimmy Dean, who weighs "a lot."
"He has more muscle," Steeler said. "You want more muscle than you do fatness. You want for him look big and muscular instead of big and flabby."
Don't we all.
Sadie Lamoreau, age 8, and her steed, Max, are in their first year of 4-H and while she admitted she was a little nervous, she also said she would compete in Horse Showmanship and Riding.
"I think I will do good," she said. "I practiced at ride night and got some help with my patterns. I did good except when (Max) was naughty."
Lamoreau also showed her cat, Lucky, at the event the next day.
"I will just do my best," she said.
Jessa Erickson, 13 of Saco, was at day two of the 4-H kickoff and was accompanied by her rabbit, Zeus, whom she has had for five years. She said that Zeus has been in past shows and he had done well, getting All-Around Champ in their first year together.
"I hope I do good today," she said. "The event is really about the knowledge you have and how well you know your rabbit."
Erickson will also be entering gardening projects at this year's fair, as well as showing her pig, Rico Suave.
Renzey Raymond, of Malta, was showing her rabbit, Dixie, who is part Mini Lop and part Chinchilla. She said she got Dixie as a Christmas present last year and was hoping for a blue ribbon on the day.
"It might happen, but she will have to listen to me," Raymond said.
Dixie must have listened because when the day was complete, she and Raymond earned a Rabbit Showmanship 2nd.
