Great Northern Hotel changes hands
The Great Northern Hotel, established in Malta in 1903 by Mr. and Mrs. Max Sklower, and operated by the Sklower brothers since 1917, has been sold to Homer Sherlock of Sydney.
The Great Northern was one of the first brick buildings in Malta in one of the first large buildings to be erected on Malta's Southside, the town having originally been built on the northside of the Great Northern tracks.
It was one of the few businesses established in Malta that has been owned and operated by father and sons. It is perhaps one of the best-known hotels in the northern part of the state as well as one of the oldest. It was constructed with bricks manufactured in a local brickyard by the late Dan McKay, known as the "County Splitter McKay" by old-timers.
Mr. Sherlock has operated a restaurant in Sydney for a number of years and before that was in business in Saco. He is the son of the late Tom Sherlock of Saco.
