The City of Malta’s Parks and Rec department has announced several events starting in the next few weeks including Soccer Camp, Junior Golf Camp, Art in the Park, Softball, and Cornhole.

“We have been very busy,” said Sally Wright, the Director of Malta Parks and Recreation.

Wright and assistant director Jessica Zeiger said that they have been working hard to coordinate events and they have also kept the weight room facility clean and sanitized since it’s opening a couple of weeks ago.

They have listed several events on social media including the rescheduled 2020 Cornhole League that was supposed to happen last March, is set to start on Saturday, June 6. The games will be played weekly and will conclude with a two-day tournament starting on Friday, July 10, and ending Saturday, July 11.

“It’s a different activity for a different group of people that aren’t your average basketball jocks or softball playing people,” said Jessica Zeiger of Malta Parks and Recreation.

This year’s league will consist of 10, 2-person teams of players aged 16 and over. Registration for the event is closed as the league is already full of teams.

“We were ready to play and we got shut down,” Wright said. “Now we are up and running again.”

The first summer camp of 2020 will be the Malta Soccer Camp. The three-day event will be held at Trafton Park softball fields from Tuesday, June 16, to Thursday, June 18. The camp will consist of three sessions split by age group. The first will be the Beginner’s Soccer Camp held from 10 a.m. through 11 a.m. for campers ages 4-6. The second is a Skill Soccer Camp to be held from 1 p.m. through 3 p.m. for campers ages 7-10. The third grouping is a Skills Soccer Camp from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for campers 11-14. Registration is due on the first day of camp. Forms can be found at Malta’s City Hall building and turned in prior to camp.

The soccer camp will be instructed by Kendrik Wright, who instructed the classes last year.

The Parks and Rec Department does not know if and when they can hold their yearly Youth Soccer League, which has been held in the fall in previous years.

“We are hoping that we can hold league again,” Wright said.

Coed Softball will only have one six-week season this year starting on Tuesday, June 23, and continuing every Tuesday until the last games on July 28. The games start at 6 p.m. Registration forms can be picked up at the City Hall and are due on Tuesday, June 16.

Junior Golf Camp will consist of two sessions this summer, with the first session starting on Tuesday, June 23, and ending on Thursday, June 25, and the second camp starting on Tuesday, July 14, through Thursday, July 16. The camp is for golfers in third grade to fifth grade. Registration forms can be picked up at the City Hall.

Art in the Park is a new event for 2020 and will take place on Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 23, at Veterans Park. The camp is for children ages four to 11 and will split into three age groups. The time for children 4-5 years of age will be at 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Children ages 6-7 will meet from 11:20 p.m. to 12:05 p.m., and children ages 8-11 will meet from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. Registration forms can be picked up at the City Hall and are due on Tuesday, June 16.

“We just wanted to try something new, fun, and crafty,” Wright said. “We will make a little project for the kids to take home.”

Later in the summer Tia Siewing will host Tumbling and Gymnastics classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, starting on Monday, August 3, and concluding on Friday, August 14. There will be a showcase on Saturday, August 15, at 10 a.m. at the City Hall. Classes for children ages 3-5 will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Classes for children ages 6-12 will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
