Blue Ridge Brewing Trivia Night returns

What ocean does the Red River run into? What's another name for a polygraph test? What side is the port side of a ship?

These are a few of the many questions that were heard during Trivia Night at Blue Ridge Brewing in Malta last Thursday, May 21. The event had its second meeting since the brewery reopened it's doors earlier this month.

The event, put on by Father Cory Sticha and Brenda Rummel of St. Mary's Catholic Church, originally started at Blue Ridge Brewing in October of 2018. Fr. Cory said that the event is based on a trivia event held in Dickinson, N.D.

"There is a bar there called the Rock Bar that does trivia very similar to how we are doing it," Fr. Cory said. "We were looking at ideas for how to raise money for the parish and we thought, this is a great way to do it."

Since the Trivia Night's introduction, the event has raised over $3,000 for St. Mary's even after prize money for Blue Ridge Brewing Gift Certificates have been paid for. The funding goes towards the general needs of the parish.

Fr. Cory was excited to be able to host the event even with restrictions. The event had been shut down due to the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 Virus.

"I think like everyone else, we are ready for a little bit of normalcy," Fr. Cory said. "We are ready to get back to how things were before everything broke loose."

He also said that they still want to be careful and aware of what's going on pertaining to the COVID-19 Virus.

According to Fr. Cory the event has been a hit with regulars and even folks from out of town. Last Thursday, a family from Michigan was at Blue Ridge Brewing and played along.

"People always seem to enjoy trivia," Fr. Cory said.

Fr. Cory, who has emceed the event for almost every week of its existence will be transferred to Cascade and Fort Shaw after the last weekend of June. Fr. Cory has been in Malta for ten years.

Bri Shores, the owner of Blue Ridge Brewing, often steps in to lead the event if Fr. Cory is unable to participate. Shores will likely lead the event after Fr. Cory transfers.

Round one of trivia includes General Knowledge questions, for example, Name the only state in the United States of America that begins with an A but does not end with an A.

In round one, the participants are not allowed to talk to each other or use any search browser. If caught cheating that person owes everyone in the bar a beer.

"It hasn't happened yet," Shores said.

Round two is music trivia. In this round, a team of two to four people is allowed.

"Fr. Cory plays thirty seconds to one minute of a song," Shores said. "The teams can talk amongst themselves and write down the title, the artist, and the year of that song."

Each correct answer is worth two points in the second round and each song can net a team six points.

Trivia night starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. every Thursday night at the Blue Ridge Brewing. The answers to the questions in the story are; The Indian Ocean, Lie Detector Test, Left side of the ship, and Arkansas.
