One Nation, Under God

I feel for our children

I definitely understand the reasoning because there is a lot at stake, but I am bummed that the spring sports season is canceled.

While revisiting the history of Phillips County Sports has been fun, I miss seeing kids compete in sports. When I was a senior in high school, I chose to graduate early and miss out on my spring courses intentionally, but I really feel for the seniors of 2019-20 who were not given the option to complete a traditional senior year. Those kids won’t know what it’s like to get back to a state meet in golf or track. Many seniors will have never made state at all despite hoping to reach that goal this year.

The list goes on; prom, graduation, final pep rallies and assemblies… I know that it’s terrible and I can’t help but feel for kids that have to go through this.

I feel for my son PJ, who misses his friends and class. Hearing his excitement and enthusiasm when he learned that he could see videos of his teacher read stories to him through an app, nearly made my eyes water. He is eager to learn and misses his teacher and his classmates.

Lincoln can’t comprehend what is going on but I know that some days he seems to be affected by the changes. He can be crankier than usual and at times really loving. The other day he was helping mom vacuum around the house. Even after mom had been done, he continued with his toy vacuum for close to 45 minutes. I tried to tell him to take a break, but he kept going. He tired himself out and took a long nap.

I have been enjoying seeing how smart the boys are becoming and how much they enjoy each other’s company; for the most part. There are times I have had to separate them because they have both shown that they can push each other’s buttons.

I do hope that life can return to normal, but we will be vigilant in trying to keep our family and community safe. If I can remember I will wear a mask and keep the hand sanitizer handy. Be safe.
