Malta Walleyes Unlimited Needs You!

Local Walleyes seek volunteers, holding special meeting Feb. 27

For the last 31 years, the Malta Chapter Walleyes Unlimited have taking youths fishing, maintained local fishing holes and projects, offered scholarships, donated to local organizations, and hosted their famous annual fish fry banquet, but if volunteers don't step up and help, and in a hurry, the storied organization will cease to exists in Phillips County.

Malta' Don Voegel and Malta Mayor John Demarais visited the PCN last week to announce that an important meeting will be held at the Stockman Bar backroom in Malta this Thursday, February 27, starting at 7 p.m. to discuss the Chapter's future.

Voegel and Mayor Demarais - who have each served the Malta Walleyes in different capacities over the years, including Chapter President - said that of late, there has been a lack of attendance at monthly meetings and there are only two officers and there is a need for existing members to step up and take over, or new members to join and lead the chapter into its future.

"We have to get this rolling again," Mayor Demarais said. "We need more help."

"This is a plea for help," Voegel said. "We would really like to see (the Malta Walleyes) continue, but it is not going to if people don't come out and volunteer."

The men said that if things don't change and new leadership doesn't step up, this summer's Camp Walleye at Nelson Reservoir will likely be the last and as for March's Annual Malta banquet, if it is held at all, might not occur until April.

"If we get the help we need, that is what we are considering," Voegel said. "If we get a response from this meeting, we will do our best to have a banquet in April, if not, Camp Walleye in the summer may be the last happening."

If you want to help the Malta Walleyes and are unable to attend the Thursday night meeting, or you have questions about the Chapter, contact Mayor Demarais at 301-1075, or Voegel at 390-1708.

"Many hands make light work," Mayor Demarais said. "We really need people to step up."

"We are a good organization and we have accomplished many things over the years," Voegel said. "We are community minded, but if we don't get help, this is going to go away."
