M-ettes split away games

Malta defeats Lady Wolves, fall to Havre

The Malta M-ettes Basketball team split games in a two game road trip last weekend as the team defeated the Wolf Point Lady Wolves on Thursday, January 30, and then fell to the Havre Lady Blue Ponies on Saturday, February 1.

The M-ettes will see a pair of teams that they defeated earlier this season as they face the Rocky Boy Morning Stars on Friday, in Malta at 7:30 p.m. The M-ettes will then travel to Roundup to take on the Lady Panthers on Saturday, February 8. The M-ettes previously defeated Rocky Boy 63-39 on Saturday, January 4. Malta defeated Roundup in Malta 40-32, on Saturday, January 11.

In Malta's win over Wolf Point last Thursday, the team was led by Kelbee Denham who had a game-high 14 points.

"Kelbee was getting the ball and she was just on fire," senior captain Carly Garfield told the PCN. "A lot of her shots were going in and it was a really good game for her."

Garfield had seven points. Kylee Nelson also had seven points. Justine Lamb provided a boost on rebounds, racking up 11 boards. Allie Kunze had seven rebounds.

"We all worked together well that night," Garfield told the PCN. "We had good intensity, the whole team."

Addy Anderson, a freshman guard was also asked what they did well against the Lady Wolves.

"We got to the free throw line and our guards were penetrating well," Anderson said. "We made a lot of shots and our defense shut them down."

Malta's defense limited Mya Fourstar to five points.

"The key was not letting the ball get to her because she gets mad if no one passes it to her," Anderson said. "She is their main scorer."

Garfield shared what the game was like from her perspective in the paint defensively.

"Wolf Point tried to drive a lot, but they didn't make many of their layups," Garfield said. "I was making it tough on them because they would run right into me and they couldn't shoot over me."

In Malta's 61-45 loss to Havre, the M-ettes were led in scoring by Maddie Williamson who had nine points. Kunze added eight points and six rebounds. Anderson had seven points, and Denham added six points.

Havre outpaced Malta 17-6 in the first quarter, 13-11 in the third period, and 22-17 in the fourth. The M-ettes turned the ball over 18 times and the Blue Ponies were able to capitalize, scoring 20 points off those turnovers.
