One Nation, Under God
Dear Editor,
Flying flags at half-staff is a symbol of respect and honor for the many who have lost their lives during tragic and unforeseen events whether past or present. It seems more recently I’ve noticed several flags throughout the City of Malta that have not been flown at half-staff when ordered by Governor Bullock. For example, Powell County Montana lost EMT DaryLynne Day in the line of duty this August due to a tragic event that took place during their annual fair. Governor Bullock issued a proclamation to fly all Montana flags at half-staff in honor and remembrance of the life that was lost that day. However, during the weekend when the flags were to be flown half-staff, I noticed many Malta flags that were not in compliance. This is very disappointing to see as it reflects poorly on how our community represents and honors these individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice during their course of work.
Furthermore, Governor Bullock issued another proclamation for deputy Jake Allmendinger in Gallatin County who lost his life in the line of duty just this month. It was ordered that all flags be flown half-staff on Friday, October 25, yet again I noticed several flags throughout the City that were not flown at half-staff in honor and remembrance of Deputy Allmendinger. Therefore, I felt compelled to say something, if for any reason, to encourage the community to educate themselves on the various resources that are available to know when to fly flags at half-staff, if this is what’s preventing them from doing so. I ask and encourage anyone with a flag that flies on their property whether residential, commercial, etc, to please, take the time to know when the flag needs to be flown at half-staff. The time it takes to do so is incalculable when compared to the sacrifice made by the individual(s) that are being honored during those days.
