100 years ago

September 19, 1919

Sergeant Pressley, Phillips County tallest solider, had returned after two years in the army, one year of which was spent in AEF.

Amos Kelley was in town taking a rest after his summer’s work. He had cut six tons of alfalfa to the acre in three cuttings and had leveled 140 acres for additional hay land.

Egil Solberb had arrived in San Francisco after army service of two years.

Wallace Coburn was in Malta between picture making jobs in Hollywood.

Editor Withrow of the “Dodson Idea” was a business visitor in Malta.

Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Schepplman, residents of Malta for seven years, were hosts at a farewell party. Mr. Schepplman was employed by the U.S. Reclamation Service at Malta.

September 21, 1944

Pete Demarais is reported killed in action

The death of Pfc. Pete Demarais, son of Mrs. Celina Demarais, missing in action for nearly a year, had been confirmed by a telegram from the War Department.

Pfc. Demarais was killed in Italy on Nov. 8, 1943. He was born in Malta on July 27, 1913, enlisted in the army about two years ago. He is the second son of Mrs. Demarais as Pvt. Eddie Demarais recently received the Purple Heart decoration for wounds received in the invasion of Normandy.

Ereaux is elected president of Dodson F.U.

The Dodson Farmers Union Local meeting was held on September 11 at the town hall. About 20 persons attended this meeting. Election of officers for the following year  was held and resulted as follows:

Victor Ereaux, president; Aaron Swallow, vice president; Mamie Swallow, secretary-treasurer; and Edna Smith, L. Fry, and L. Vernbeck,executive board.

Delegates elected for the country convention are Dora Goodson, Harold McBride, Edna Smith, Sara Niebur, and Victor Ereaux.

The program included some good readings by Edna Smith, Calia Minugh, and Dixie McBride, and poems by Florence Minugh and Brian McBride.

50 years ago

September 25, 1969

Barnard receives award

The Weather Bureau recently announced the presentation of its Western Region Special Service Award to William A. Barnard, long-time cooperative observer at Telegraph Creek, some 40 miles south of Malta in the breaks just north of the Missouri River. The weather station was set up in Mr. Barnard’s care on May 8, 1931, and he has been official observer there ever since.

Moose seen in area

A.C. Williamson, who lives about 10-miles south of Dodson, recently spotted a bull moose in a shelterbelt of trees on his place. Williamson reports he was a peaceful animal. He crawled to within 59-yards of the moose to take pictures of him. The moose was in a horse corral for a few moments, jumping in at one end and out the other. He spent the rest of the day within 300-feet of the coral.

General rain relieved drought

A general rain was welcome over Phillips County last Saturday night after the county had received no noticeable precipitation since the middle of July.

Hall of Fame at Carroll

Dennis “Denny” Goodheart, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Goodheart of Malta, will be inducted into the Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame at the school’s annual Homecoming football game in Helena.

Chances leads the way

In his first game as a Carroll College saint, Malta’s

Chance Demarais was the Saints leading rusher with 65-yards on five carries in the team’s 35-13 win over Azusa Pacific last Saturday.

Davis named “most dedicated”

Saleena Davis earned the “most dedicated swimmer” trophy at the conclusion of the Malta Swim Team season. She received the trophy at the team’s annual award picnic.
