100 years ago

September 12, 1919

School District No. 20, 30 miles north of Malta, had let the contract for the construction of a community school building 32 by 40 feet. The building was to have a full basement and two stories. In the basement there was t to be a bedroom for the matron, kitchen and dining room in addition to a furnace room. The first floor was to contain dormitories for boys and girls.

An epidemic of influenza had made its appearance for the second year.

A school health program was being launched in the county with meetings scheduled for Bowdoin, Content, Huntley, Whitewater, Valleytown, Lovejoy, Caldwell, Hermanson, Saco, Malta, North Strater, South Strater, Freewater, Bennett Lake, and South Wagner.

Homesteaders along the road from Fanning Hill to Lovejoy were to hold a rock picking meeting on September 22.

September 14, 1944

Malta School enrollment is 602

The total enrollment in the Malta Grade and High schools is 602 as compared to an even 600 on the same date a year ago, according to figures compiled by J.H. Lesselyoung, Superintendent.

The high school enrollment is up to 216 from 209 a year ago while the grade school shows a decrease from 291 to 286.

Huge spuds raised on farm near Hinsdale

John H. Hansen, who farms on the Milk River northwest of Hinsdale, has raised some phenomenally large potatoes for this section of Montana. A sample potato weighing a pound and a held and measuring 13-inches in circumference is on display at the "Hinsdale Tribune" office. Hansen says he finds 10 or more of these large Bliss Triumph potatoes in a hill and believes he has set a record for the area.

Pioneer stockman of Saco dies in California

Dan Garrison, one of Saco's pioneer settlers, died at his home in Monrovia, Calif., last Tuesday, according to word received this week.

Daniel W. Garrison came to northern Montana in 1892 over the Texas cattle trail. His first trip was with XIT cattle outfit and he remained in Montana until the fall of 1893 when he went east to attend the Chicago World's Fair. In 1900 Mr. Garrison went into the sheep business for himself, making his headquarters 50 miles north of Saco.

September 18, 1969

Capt. Mangis awarded DFC

U.S. Air Force Capt. Edward V. Mangis, son of Vern Mangis of Malta, has been decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross for aerial achievement over North Vietnam, prior to the bombing halt.

Captain Mangis distinguished himself as an F-4D Phantom pilot when he flew a combat mission against a heavily defended highway transportation and supply network.

Jim Maxie left Tuesday for California where he will spend a month or so assisting the California Border Patrol in the Mexican "wetback" program.

Mustangs won season opener against Circle Wildcats 45-6

The Malta Mustangs turned on the power as they raced past the Circle Wildcats 45-6 in the season opener for both teams at the Malta Athletic Field last Fria night.

The Mustangs rang up scores in each of the quarters on their way to the win. Mustang Craig Stiles wasted little time getting things going as he mixed his running game with Ken Kaufman and Mark Hughes breaking away for some good runs. Stiles then hit Kaufman with a first down pass and on the next play hit Duane Walker with a 40-yard strike for the first score of the game.

Working hard on the defense with good efforts, reports the coaching staff, were Bruce Bruckner, Fred Perry, Duane Walker, Jeff Hungerford, Mark Hughes, and Randy Frazier.

September 14, 1994

Hospital sign dedicated

It's been two years in the making, but the Phillips County Hospital unveiled an impressive brick and granite sign Thursday morning during a ceremony which also included an outdoor lunch. Jim Carney contributed the sign in memory of Bill Thompson. Carney said the sand and gravel he uses in his business, Malta Ready Mix, has come from the Thompson property and he wanted to do something in Mr. Thompson's memory. Mrs. Faye Thompson was on hand to help with the unveiling along with the Hospital Board Chairman Jim Sandsness. The granite portion of the sign was made by Bell Mortuary and weighs more than one ton.

Dodson High runners big at Cut Bank meet

Dodson Varsity Cross Country stepped up a level this past week. They took an invite to the Cut Bank time train on September 4.

The team roster is as followed: Seniors Tristen Keinenberger, Charles Stephens, Adrian Shawl, Junior Brett Jaynes, Sophomores Jordan Jefferson, Margaret Bear, and freshmen Rocky Lewis and Jimmy Martin.
