Malta Swim Team wraps 2019 season

Another successful season for the Malta Swim Team came to a conclusion the first week of August in Sidney, Mont., as the swimmers competed in the State Swim Meet.

Team Coach Cassandra Pratt, in her third year leading the team, said that though the weather was hot, the six swimmers who qualified for the State Meet showed up ready to compete and she couldn't believe that the season was already at its end.

"The season flew this year," Coach Pratt said. "With a much smaller team this season I had more of a chance to have more one on one time with my swimmers. I was very fortunate to have Janine Tuss assisting me this season with morning practice while I handled the night practice."

All told, the regular season saw a total of 16 swimmers for Malta this year and by the time State came around, Jahmiah Huffman LaBrie, Taya Wilke, Darrow Messerly, Nolan Moore, and Makiya Wilke had all swam their way to the final meet of the year and fared well.

Huffman LaBrie scored a 2nd place finish in the backstroke with a time of 42.52; 4th place finish in the fly with a time of 45.72 and a 5th place ranking in the 100-individual-medley with a time of 1:36.49.

Taya Wilke took 7th in the individual medley clocking in at 2:21.36, 8th in the 25-Breaststroke with a time of 1:24.20.

Messerly wrapped-up his 2019 season with a 12th place finish in the 200-individual medley, and an 8th place finish in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:24.20.

Nolan Moore, who was also cleaning up on awards at the Phillips County Fair in several Open Class contests while the State Swim Meet was happening, captured a 10th place finish in the 25-backstroke with a final time of 31.39.

"I'm very proud of all my swimmers, from the ones I have had in the past to a few new ones that competed this year," Coach Pratt said. "It's always wonderful to see the kids come back to this sport and the new ones who want to try it out."

As the 2019 Malta Swim Team season came too end, so to did the Malta Municipal Pool season as the facilities was closed early so the Malta Public Works team will soon start to refurbish the bathhouse.
