One Nation, Under God

10 years of pain

I’m a man. So the thought of anyone touching my feet makes me uneasy. I cringe at the thought of getting a pedicure or a foot massage. Even going to a podiatrist is a no-go.

That being said, I should’ve gone to a foot specialist years ago to help with a situation that I have had for the past 10 years.

When I met my wife Susan in September of 2009, it was as a food runner at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. That particular gig was extremely hard on my feet. This event featured more walking and running than I was used to in uncomfortable, non-slip restaurant shoes. I developed an extremely painful corn/callous under my fourth toe on the ball of my foot.

Over the years I learned to live with it. This came with the consequence of not really wanting to do any cardiovascular workouts (running, jogging, elliptical, biking).

Over the years I had tried several ways to remove this corn/callous but it just kept coming back. One of the cheapest options were callous remover pads by Dr Scholls. I have attempted this method time and time again but it wasn’t working.

Last month I had a moment that made me feel like a real donkey. I opened a package of the callous remover pads and looked closer at the contents of the package. I realized that there were nine cushions and nine discs. Prior to that moment, I had only noticed the cushions.

Oh no. I looked at the bottom of the packages where it specifically said, “nine cushions, nine medicated discs.”

I read the directions and have since followed them religiously. After a week or so a crazy amount of the callous had fallen off and the pain has been gone!

I may not fully read user-agreement for software or cell phone applications but when it comes to things that affect my health and quality of life, I will definitely take time to read the directions. It’s just sad that this callous could’ve been gone years ago!

Welp. The boys are getting big. Lincoln is starting to learn words and social cues. The one that surprised me the most was “thank you.”

As far as moving goes… No updates yet. I fear that maybe some locals have staged an uprising that won’t allow us to sell our house. The fact that so many people want us to stay is extremely encouraging. Your kind words have been an encouragement to Susan and I. Thank you and we love you too.
