One Nation, Under God
It was a mournful community as several well known members who were Veterans and other long time residents of the area are no longer with us. The composite Honor Guards of Sons of the American Legion, Legion, and VFW did or will do their part in military honors for these Veterans. The Auxillary helped also. Our condolences to all. Several people from the local Legion groups attended the District 2 Spring meeting at Saco on Saturday March 30th. Next week there will be a more detailed report on the upcoming state celebrations during the 100th Birthday of the American Legion. At Saco was a partial history display of the First State gathering of World War
Veterans at Malta on June 30th and July 1st of 1919; at which the Montana branch of the American Legion was formed. Also on display was some history of the Legion Plunge (Sleeping Buffalo Resort), Saco and Dodson Post histories, and a list of the Veterans in their cemeteries. A more complete history of most of the Veterans buried in Phillips County cemeteries, all the Post Officer histories etc. will hopefully be mostly completed by Memorial Day observances on May 27, 2019 in Malta.
The DAV Van in Malta covers a big area of north central Montana to provide rides for those Veterans who are unable to find relatives or friends to get them to their VA appointments. We have a shortage of available drivers (drivers do not have to be Veterans ) to get these patients to their VA appointments. I have posted around the area the info needed to Call for a Ride and/or apply info to become a driver. (Call Ken 654-7243).
The local Posts and Sons of American Legion groups support needy community projects and groups. Send a delegation or person to our meetings (3rd Tuesdays 6 p.m.) or send particulars c/o P.O. Box 714 Malta.
