100 years ago

March 1, 1919

The World War Veterans organization was formed at a statewide meeting in Helena. Major Charles H. Sheridan was named the president. George Cowie of Malta was elected director. The first annual meeting was to be held in Malta in June.

Joe Young's dog driven by James Battram took first place in Koke's annual dog race. Luther Gabriel's dog won second place.

A bill creating a state normal school at Malta had passed the house and had been sent up for Governor Stewart's signature. The bill created an appropriation of $31,000 for maintenance for the next two years.

Violet Veseth and Lochiel Edwards, fifth-grade pupils, had received 100 in arithmetic.

Andrew Tweedie was appointed postmaster to succeed Miss Patton, who had recently resigned.

The annual meeting of the Milk River Gun Club was scheduled for the following week.

Charles A. Ross of Dodson was elected president of the County Farm Bureau.

There were 366 applications in Phillips County for seed loans. The total acreage represented was 19,439 acres.

March 2, 1944

Three men inducted in Army from county

The following men have been accepted by the Army, and have been inducted at Fort Douglass, Utah.

Glen James Dyrdahl of Malta, Norris Henry Severeide of Loring, and Clinton Keith Farrar, a Phillips County registrant, left for training with the Chinook contingent.

The above men made up the February contingent from this county.

Herder found not guilty

William Kester, a sheepherder employed by the Hansen brothers of Zortman, was found not guilty of abandoning his flock of sheep by a jury of eight men and four women in district court here Wednesday.

Kester was charged with walking away from a band of 2,400 sheep in June of 1943. He alleged that he had given notice to a camp tender of his intentions to quit the job.

Jurors who returned an unanimous verdict of not guilty were Theodore Hegreberg, Earl Duty, Moses Heberlee, Harry Dunham, Albert Haugen, Alfred Charlton, Mrs. James Leo, Ellen Greeting, Charles Koss, Florence Garrison, Mrs. Louis Matoon, and George Ore.

Attendance record set in Glasgow

Climaxing a District 3, Class B basketball tournament that broke all records for attendance, Wolf Point's fast-breaking Wolves defeated a stubborn, fighting Malta team, 37-27, to take district honors Saturday night at the Glasgow Civic Center. Saco won from Hinsdale, 42-33, in the game for third and fourth place.

The tournament broke all previous records for attendance and gate receipts. More than 1,200 spectators jammed the center and the receipts from the three-day classic were $1,923, far above any previous year's figure.

Blizzard locks county in grip of snowdrifts

Blizzard conditions which shut down Phillips County roads for 24 hours last Wednesday night and Thursday gave way to spring-like temperatures this week.

Highs excepted to reach the 50s and perhaps low 60s later this week were melting snowbanks and turning ice to slush throughout the county.

Ike and Katie Blatter, who live about 15 miles south of Malta, shared their home Wednesday night with five stranded motorists, including the chief of police of Glasgow and two of his officers who were returning from business in Laurel.

Saco girls off to state for second time ever

The Saco Lady Panthers may feel like they've already been through a state tournament.

Saco survived a challenge game Monday night in Wolf Point, posting a 42-40 win over Fairview after losing to arch rival Hinsdale, Sunday night in Sidney, 28-26, in the championship game of the Eastern Class C Divisional Tournament.

Saco will advance to the State Class C Tournament in Belgrade next Thursday, making their second-ever trip to the championship 12-years after the 1997 team was first to ever achieve the feat.

Basketball recap

The Whitewater Penguins were riding a six-game win streak into the District 3C basketball tournament next week in Glasgow. They were to face Dodson in the opening round of the tournament after beating the Coyotes 65-35 in the final game of the regular season. Kale Love scored a season-high 25 points in the Penguin win.
