Lady Coyotes welcome a few new faces
Last season the Dodson Lady Coyotes fell in a consolation Semi-final game to Lustre in the 2018 3C District Tournament.
The Lady Coyotes will have eight athletes this season though the team lost Donna Dale and Kyla Racine to graduation. The team also lost All-Conference athlete Melony Fetter due to her transfer to Harlem.
The team returns junior Christina Jaynes who made the list as an honorable mention last season. The team also welcomes back junior Kailee Henry, who made the list as an eighth grader in 2015-16. Henry transferred from Harlem earlier this year.
"Kailee works hard, her love of the game is still there, and it shows," Coach Deserae KillEagle said. "She has been practicing hard, working hard, and has been trying to master her craft."
Henry has proven in years past to be a good ball-handler and finisher in fast break offense.
"She has a lot of confidence in her abilities," Coach KillEagle said. "She is willing to include the team. So, she looks for assists and ways to set her teammates up."
Jaynes proved to be a more than capable rebounder in 2017-18, averaging 10 boards a game. According to Coach KillEagle, Jaynes was one of the top rebounders in the conference. Jaynes was also one of Dodson's top scorers last season, showing the ability to draw a foul almost at will.
"Christina is pretty much our all-around player because we can put her in any position," Coach KillEagle said. "She is so willing and capable of learning the various roles out there and she is probably one of the least selfish players I know with an intense work ethic."
The team returns senior Shania KillEagle, who has been trying to improve her skills on the court during practice. S. KillEagle has played the role of motivator in seasons past and is a constant encouraging role player.
Sophomore Izzabella Messerly also returns to Dodson after she left the school her eighth grade year to transfer to Hays.
"From my understanding, she did really well out there as far as scoring," Coach KillEagle said. "She was one of the top scorers and defenders in Hays. She had a good shot. She is a hustler, and she has a natural get after it mentally."
Coach KillEagle knows that with Messerly being so aggressive, the team will need to take steps to help keep her out of foul trouble, so she can help impact the game for the Lady Coyotes.
The team also brings back sophomore Ireland Best, who played post last season.
"Her goal is to work to be a nice, strong post player," Coach KillEagle said.
Coach KillEagle admired Best's work ethic, saying that if she has a goal, she works very hard to reach that goal.
