The Republican Party made a big winning in the current election. Dudley Jones was elected state rep; H.S. Whitcomb, commissioner; Tom Johnson, sheriff; Ray Campbell, treasurer; W. G. Schneider, clerk and recorder; H.S. Munson, assessor; Fred C. Gabril, attorney; Flora Simms, superintendent; R. E. Richardson, surveyor, and R.V. Tucker, coroner.

A German delegation was reported to have left Berlin for the western front to discuss armistice terms.

W. J. Tressler was passing out elk steaks to friends.

November 4, 1943

Damage suit filed in Great Falls by Taylor

Claiming that he was the victim of a sneak attack and battered with a carpenter's hammer, Alfred Taylor Thursday instituted suit in district court against David Claypool for $5,000 general damages, $100 special damages and $10,000 penal damages.

At about 9:30 p.m. Sept. 16, 1943, according to Taylor, he was seated at a table in the Past Time Pool Hall in Malta playing cards with three of his friends.

At this time, he alleged, and "without warning or provocation, the defendant stealthily approached the plaintiff from his rear and in a cruel and inhuman fashion and manner repeatedly struck and beat the plaintiff with an ordinary carpenter's hammer having a steelhead."

Father-Daughter Banquet held Thursday

About 50 fathers and daughters attended the Father-Daughter Banquet of the Order of Rainbow at the Masonic Hall last Thursday evening.

Miss Betty Jo Ward was toastmistress and James T. Harrison made the response. Miss Delores Knutson played a piano solo, following the banquet, two skits were given. Betty Jo Ward gave "The Characteristics of an America," and Betty Jane Klemme sang.

Detail of death of Hurley are learned

A letter from Gaylord Robertson to his mother, Mrs. W.F. Robertson of Malta, gives some additional details of the death in action of Cpl. Byron (Buck) Nelson on July 30.

Robertson says: "I suppose you have all heard about Buck Hurley by now. It's too bad ...but he accomplished his job even if it did mean laying down his life to do it. He was killed on (censored) Ridge in New Guinea. This was one of the toughest spots in the entire campaign. Buck's only wish was to be the first to the top of the ridge. According to all reports, he made the top and stayed for quite a while, but in the battle that followed for control of the ridge, is where they got him. Buck went out like a man."

Robert Kirkaldie awarded the Air Medal

Sgt. Robert C. Kirkaldie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kirkaldie Sr., of Dodson, has been awarded the Air Medal for exceptionally meritorious achievement while participating in five separate bomb combat missions, according to an officials citation notice received recently by the Kirkaldies. Sgt. Kirkaldie is with the 336th Bombardment Squadron of the Army Air Force.

McKeon appointed U.S. Commissioner

Willis M. McKeon, Malta attorney, has been appointed a United States Commissioner. The appointment was made by William J. Jameson, Russell E. Smith and W.D. Murray, United States District Judges, upon the suggestion of the United States Attorney that it would be advisable to have a U.S. Commissioner in Malta.

Fire destroyed Jerry Smith home

A fire of unknown origin destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Smith west of Malta on Tuesday morning. The home was on a piece of land about four miles west of Malta on the south side of the highway, behind the former location of Kay's Café.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their four-year-old daughter were safe and were able to save a few belongings as they escaped from the burning house. The house was completely destroyed in about 25 minutes.

Man found under bridge

Authorities don't believe a man found dead Sunday afternoon under the train bridge over the Milk River west of Malta died of foul play.

Sheriff Gene Peigneux said the body of Wade Dewey Healy, 39, Fort Belknap, was found by some youngsters who spotted it on the ground next to the river below the train bridge.

Healy had been living in the Malta area in recent weeks.
