M-ettes defeat Mavericks in three sets

The Malta M-ettes and North Country Maverick volleyball times clashed last Thursday, September 27, at Malta High School.

The M-ettes won their Homecoming game in three sets. The scores were 25-13, 25-15, and 25-19.

"The key to our win was talking," Senior setter Kyleigh Schipman told the PCN. "Our serves were big too because we actually had a decent night serving."

Honored before the game was the homecoming court candidates. Schipman was escorted by Andres Lopez, Janessa Malmend was escorted by Kolter Schipman, Taylor Gilkerson was escorted by Kaden Bergos, and Chayana Stolem was escorted by Kevin Henry.

The M-ettes were led by Janessa Malmend who had eight of the team's 22 kills.

"It feels good to get a win during homecoming, especially because it's our senior year," Malmend said. "It feels good and it's exciting."

Raina Mortenson had eight of the team's 22 aces. Kloie Marks had eight of the team's 27 digs and Schipman had 15 of the team's 22 assists.

The Mavericks were led by Kaitlyn McColly who had nine of the team's 17 kills and eight of the team's 20 digs.

"We tend to start slow at games," Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "It seems like we have lost every first set of a match and then we come back and play better. It's like we are not ready to play right when the match starts."

Jaydyn Erickson had three of the Mavericks' eight blocks. Danika Soper had four of the team's 10 assists. Elise Strommen had two of the team's six aces.

"In the second set we did a good job of getting in better positions defensively, but it seems like our major issue is serve receive," Coach Wasson said.
