One Nation, Under God

MHS 2017-18 Homecoming

School spirit was at its apex Friday afternoon at Malta High School as elementary, middle and high schools filled the high school gym for the coronation ceremony as part of Homecoming week.

Prior to the arrival of the homecoming royalty, the Malta High School Pep band got things going, playing several songs including the Who's My Generation. Malta High School Principal and Activity Director Scott King welcomed all in attendance and then passed the mic to the day's emcees, Jillian O'Brien and Tyler Arnold, both Junior Class Officers. O'Brien and Arnold announced the arrival of homecoming candidates Kyleigh Schipman and Andres Lopez, Janessa Malmend and Kolter Schipman, Taylor Gilkerson and Kaden Bergos, and Chayana Stolem and Kevin Henry. At the end of the coronation, Kyleigh Schipman was crowned Homecoming Queen and Henry as Homecoming King.

Ahead of the final naming of royalty, the M-ette Cheer Squad got the crowd to participate in the "We Feel Good" cheer and M-ette Volleyball Coach Tasha Hines, M-ette Cross Country Coach Thea Solberg and Mustang Football Coach Jim Benn all spoke of their team's efforts up to this point in their respective seasons.

Between speeches, four teams comprised of students from all three schools competed in a relay race which included dressing the younger children in Mustang's football gear, setting them atop a Mustang football player (who, in turn, was belly-down on a wheeled contraption) and which were each pushed along the gym floor by a high school female. The reward for the winner was early dismissal from school one day next week and the winners – in a route-were the team of Payton Clausen, Chloe Hunter, Duke Williamson, Brooklynn Knowles, and Luke Simanton.

Each year, the Malta High School Annual is dedicated to a person or persons and this year, Lynne Brewer - who retired from teaching at the end of last year following a 35-year career as an educator (28 years in Malta) - was this year's honoree.

One of the many highlights of the afternoon's events was the singing of Blue & White by the elementary students who had spent much of this school year learning the tune under the tutelage of music teacher Nancy Murdock.

"That is the best I have ever had that song sang," Principal King declared. "And I'm old!"
