The North Country Mavericks headed east to the Froid / Medicine Lake Invitational last weekend and the young team continued to show signs of growth.
The team picked up a few wins in pool play but lost in the first round of the tournament. The event was held on Friday, September 7.
"We are starting to gel together," Mavericks Coach Charlene Wasson said. "We worked a lot on passing to the target off serve receive and free ball transition this week really paid off."
The Mavs were able to pick up a pair of wins against Jordan in the opening two sets of their outing. The scores were 15-10 and 15-5.
"With our better passing we were able to get into our offense," Coach Wasson said. "Our tempo on offense is allowing us to convert our attacks."
The team would then drop two games to Plentywood. The scores were 15-8 and 15-11.
The Mavericks would split their last pool games against Culbertson. The scores were 15-11 in favor of North Country and 15-10 in favor of Culbertson.
The Mavericks then went on to drop both sets of the opening round of the tournament to the Mon-Dak Thunder. The scores were 25-18 and 25-14.
Though the team didn't make it out of the first round of the tournament, Coach Wasson is happy with how her team is developing.
"We had a few unforced errors on our side but with repetition after repetition in practice we should be able to correct those," Coach Wasson said. "Overall we have progressed forward since two weeks ago and I am happy with that."
Kaitlyn McColly led the Mavericks that day with a total of nine kills. The team had 26 kills total. McColly also led the team in blocks with six of the team's 16 blocks.
Sarah Boucher led the team in aces that day, registering five of the team's 13. Elise Strommen had 10 of the team's 31 digs. Danika Soper had eight of the team's 16 assists.
The Mavericks will travel to Poplar on Friday, September 14, to take on Class B's Poplar Indians. They will then take on Lustre in Whitewater on Saturday, September 15.
