Malta teenager commended by Illinois folks

The Chamber of Commerce received the following letter which they felt might be of interest, especially to the employees of Tastee Freeze:

"Gentlemen:

On Friday, Aug. 16, about 5:30 p.m. we stopped at Tastee Freeze in your town. It was located right near the bridge... the service that we received from the young lady who waited on us was excellent. I sincerely wish that all American teenagers were of this young lady's caliber ...I feel that someone of authority in your town should publicly commend this girl. She is certainly a fine representative not only for teens but for Malta itself.

Sincerely,

C.B. Stalheim

Rockford, Ill."

Editors note from 1968: With a bit of snooping, we were able to come up with the information that the young lady mentioned in the letter was Kari Benzinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Benzinger of Malta, a sophomore at Malta High School. (Editor's note, 2018: Know Kari (Benzinger) Opheim of Billings, Mont.)

If audience reaction at the Saturday night premiere of the Discovery Channel's "Secrets of the Dinosaur Mummy" is any indication, the documentary should be a hit when it debuts nationally on Sunday.

As the last frame faded the documentary which traces the journey of Leonardo the Mummy Dinosaur from the time it was unearthed on the Howard and JoAnn Hammond farm north of Malta eight years ago through subsequent high-tech visual imagining to unlock the secrets inside, prompted a standing ovation from the estimated 300 viewers who gathered at the Villa Theatre in Malta for the event.
